I know that technically, you're supposed to turn the key to the "on" position to let the fuel pump run for a second, but every car I've had or seen you can just turn right to start and the car would start right up. But with my 99 maxima, with a new starter, if I don't turn the key to "on" for a second or two, the car won't start right away and/or I get a LOUD high-pitched squeel. This squeel is happening more now, even when I do let the fuel pump run. And now I have the problem of the car stalling immediately after I start it. When I start it, and the rpm's raise to about 1500 like it should, then drops down closer to idle, it drops too far and stalls.

This is what I'm thinking...idle control for the stall issue, fuel pump for the not-starting issue, and what for the squeel?

My car has 133k miles now, so I think it's a good idea to get a new fuel pump anyway.

Thanks guys!

It might be the Mass Airflow sensor and a loose pully belt?

Yeah figured the loose belt, but it just feels like a fuel delivery problem. I realize that the MAF sensor modifies how much fuel, but it seems like it's more of a problem with it actually getting there. Fuel filter, pump, idk!

Startup problem could indeed be the fuel pump. Do you ever hear the pump humming/buzzing loudly while driving or after shutoff?Stall issue could be a dirty IACV.

As for the squeal, my first suspects would be belts and A/C compressor. If the belts are old or especially if they have oil or other fluids dripping on them, they could easily be the cause of the noise. And if your belts are fluid-coated, you have bigger problems than just a squeal to address...something's leaking. The A/C compressor may be coming on at startup because you have the windshield defroster turned on. Next time you hear the squeal, check to see if defrost (which uses A/C to dry the air) or even normal A/C are on. If they are, turn them off and see if the sound goes away. If it does, you've found your culprit.
