Hi, to refresh any memories, my '94 J30 (70k miles) sometimes won't shift out of 1st gear unless I turn off the car for a few seconds and restart, then it's fine for a couple days before doing it again.

Another issue which may not be related, not sure, is sometimes at turn-on the car runs very rough idle (with engine light on) for maybe 1 minute, and then light goes off and car runs fine.

Both the transmission problem and the rough idle problem are very intermittent and they do not happen at the same time, so I don't know if they're related. I ran the transmission self-diagnostic test (not while the car had a problem) and it came back all clear. I also ran the codes in the ecu and it came back # 51 "Injector Analysis". The car was also running fine during this test.

What does "Injector Analysis" mean? After searching this site for similar problems, the likely problems mentioned are:

- rev sensor- clean the MAF- TPS- speed sensor- knock sensor

Understand that I am an idiot when it comes to this stuff. It was all I could do to figure out how to remove the ecu for reading codes. I'm going to have a shop do the work but they keep telling me they can't do anything unless the problem is occuring when I bring it in, which is impossible to do. They don't want to just start replacing random parts, so I'm trying to narrow this down to likely problems.

Does it sound like the transmission problem and the rough idle problem are related, or impossible to know? Should I wait and read the ecu code again when one or both problems reappear? Thanks much!

Someone here also said to use Consult I II or II to read diagnostics. The local transmission place says they don't have that, it's Infiniti specific. I wonder if I should have the Infiniti dealer use the Consult? The dealer seemed very hesitant to do ANYTHING except replace the whole transmission! He said take it to a transmission shop. But if the transmission shop doesn't have the right diagnostic tool what good is that? What would you guys do???

Oh, and in case anyone else reading this site wasn't born with this talent, here's how you find and remove the ecu in order to read the codes:

It's located behind the carpet on the right hand side of the passenger footwell.

First, peel the carpet back (unscrewing 1 or 2 black plastic nut things), trying not to break some cheap pieces of plastic trim in the process (good luck).

Unscrew (and disengage from 2 clips) the plastic panel that runs above the footwell on the underside of the glove box. Remove the right hand side clip that was holding this panel in place.

Remove the 2 larger bolts that hold the ecu bracket in place.

Swing (pry, force, squeeze, yank, etc) the ecu out and down so you can access the edge of it that faces the front of the car. That's the edge where the test screw and LED are located.

check the ohm resistance on your injectors....go from there...if its a transmission problem and there is writeup on here(youll have to do a search)on how to diagnose the transmission

Your injectors should be within the 10 to 14 ohm range. anything below or above that is indicative of injector failure.
