ok so im almost done with rebuiding my SR and i go to hook up the battery to my car to try and crank it over and my starter kicks on as soon as i hook the battery on, the plug is on and the wire with the hoop is connected to the upper post..........when i connected it to the bottom post sparks flew out of the side.i herd the bottom post is not used, but i forgot. so i reconnected it to the top post. wtf is wrong ?

p.s. when i mean the starter comes on, it just spins, it doesn't extend and try to crank the motor over

thats kinda strange, did you leave your starter outside, or drop it?

if not, the best i can say is just to make shure you hook everything up the same way you took it off. if you have another friend with an SR take a look at the way everything is connected.

If you still cant figure it out, regular auto parts stores test starters. just take it to one of them and have them test it.

it is on the solenoid post. move it over one space, once you do that your ignition will control everything.

I blew my solenoid before.

replacing the solenoid... or rebuilding the starter and adding new brushes all in one isnt hard and its a good Idea.

so a blown solenoid causes sparks to shoot out ?

not consistently.

I hooked my battery directly to my starter once, when my harness was bad, and tho it cranked the first time ... ( with a big spark )

the second time, it just spun ... and I blew the solenoid.

I know you're the guy that never searches. So I brought you this link for rebuilding your starter its missing a few details but I can help you with the rest.

Your power wire, it sounds like it is connected to the wrong post on your starter, which is sendingf a 12v signal causing your starter to spin but not engage as soon as you hook up your battery, i just did the same thing recently. If you remove your starter it will have 2 posts, the upper one will connect your starter to your solenoid, the bottom one recieves the 12v from your battery.

i only have the power wire and the plug, power goes to the top post bottom post is unused and then you just plug in the plug. but i took the starter to advanced auto and they told me its not putting out any amps..................whatever that means, but it comes out and spins like its suppose to.

p.s. im pretty sure te bottom post is unused, can anybody confirm ?

on a S13 STARTER the bottom post is what the 12v source is attached to, so when you turn your key it activates the solenoid, don't listen to me if you don't want to but the only way your solenoid will activate the starter with out the ignition is if it is seeing a 12v signal

yeah but how is it seeing a 12v signal with no key in the ignition and my ignition switch is fine because the fuel pump comes on when its suppose to, and i just replaced the lower electrical part to the ignition switch

because the 12v power wire is on the same post as the wire that goes to your solenoid. It should not be like that....the power wire and solenoid wires should be independent from each other....when they are on the same post your starter will spin but not engage as soon as it is hooked to your battery because your solenoid thinks the ignition is sending a signal...I still couldn't tell you why (and thank god it didn't) engage the flywheel or there would have been some more issues but your having the same exact issue that I had when I reassembled my engine.

if the solenoid is good, you just need to replace the brushes. and relube the interior of the starter

read my DIY tutorial I rebuilt a starter that had the same problem as yours, now it works like new.

i only have one wire and one plug, and everytime i plug in the battery the starter goes off, so according to you the only wire that i have shold be plugged into the bottom post and the top should be the solenoid lead ?

wtf is the solenoid lead ? and where does it come from because i think im gonna have to find it in my wiring somewhere

are you thick?

hook it to the post that it ISN'T connected to now. the only OTHER one it could be.

it should be the post FARTHEST away from the starter body with nothing else connected to it.

goddamn dude.

well since it was in the car it was hard to see the problem, but the wire between the head and the solenoid were loose, the starter works now, buts its lazy and it gets stuck sometimes
