Seems like old times again....an unlikely product priced thousands below other similar cars in its class that many will dismiss due to its roots {just like 1990 all over again when all laughed at the thought of lowly nissan/toyota selling luxury cars} Will it gain a place in the market and prove to be a modern day repeat of the Q45/Ls and rock the foundation of what can be expected at that price level?

Certainly looks interesting on paper...unfortunatly the front end and grill looks bland......wait, didnt we hear that same thing somewhere before????

Too little on some levels and too much too late on others. Luxo v8's. A rapidly shrinking mkt.

And what is left of those buyers will go for the more traditional marques. BMW, MBZ etc.

IMHO!

An interesting execution.

It seems like they tuned the suspension too much towards the LS and not enough towards the G50. But that can be easily corrected.

Direct injection and more power should come in two years. I would look at the V8.

From what I've read the Genesis is ok and good a value but its not a driver like our G50 or any BMW.

How about the new 7 series? This could be the G50 incarnation... 4 wheel steering, more road feel than the last series, less "Bangles" better Idrive...etc.

My friend has a 06 750li....I personally find it to be an unattractive looking exterior wrapped around a sterile interior with the I drive being a huge step backwards for a company that used to promote itself as "the ultimate drivivg machine"....more like over-complicated,distracting,and gimmicky.

Now the Audi A8....what a beautiful interior in a sexy body...shame it isnt as reliable as Lexus/Infiniti

I am probably one of the first Americans to own a Hyundai. I was working in Korea at the time and bought a brand new Hyundai Pony and picked it up right at the factory, no middlemen. On the drive home the clutch started slipping, luckily I was near a Hyundai service center and managed to creep there to get it fixed, less than 20 miles on the car.. Then two weeks later I was driving in the same area and rode over some railroad tracks and the rear shocks fell off. Again luckily I was near the service center and they fixed it under warranty. I think there method of quality control back then was none, just wait for it to break and fix it under warranty.

Was the Pony the equivalent of the Excel which I think was one of the first Hyundias sold in the states? My brother bought one new for its good gas mileage and it was a rattlecan just a few years later. Cheap though. I like the looks of the new Hyundias and I think they've greatly improved their quality since the 80's. Still cheaper than all the Japenese car makers too.

I have read a few reviews now, the consensus is this is NOT a high performance car but more of a luxo car. This is the LS400 more than a G50.

Its going to gobble up Lexus, Mercury, Buick, and Toyota buyers. The Avalon is being discontinued and a lot of Lexus owners are only seeking comfort, quality, and value.

There is a big audience for this car.

Goody, the Hyundai Pony and Excel looked about the same, I assume they had to modify the Pony to meet American safety and emission specs. I bought the car in 1984, and sold it the next year when I returned to the U.S. After the two initial failures I didn't have any more problems with it.

That's a smart move on Hyundai's part and will help sales. Cadillac & Toyota may be ashamed of their senior demographics -- the marketing folks try to chase anyone over 60 away from the dealership -- but Hyundai won't have that problem.

Good point. And the over 55 group is geared to frugality.

Saw one at the dealer recently. Looks more anonymous in person. Seats are OK but nothing special. The real killer is rear seat headroom, worse than an Altima. I'm 6'2" and my head got wedged in the back. a friend who's 6'3" (but all legs) had the same problem. Front headroom with sunroof wasn't that great either.

Good thing most of the tall Koreans are under 40, they won't be buying one. It's a preacher/executive car.

With after market shocks and springs, it could still be interesting for us short 6 footers.

Could be a good deal on the used market if it depreciates like our beloved Q45!

well i happen to be a sales rep for hyundai going on 6 yrs. so i could be of some use here. the genesis has some of the best tech on it you could find in any of the top brands just for alot less. bmw and benz sell there name and no longer there prouduct sam geos for all the other popular names. the base 33k genesis comes standard with a 290 horsepower 3.8 v6. aisin 6spd auto transmission with manual shift. SACHS suspension.independent rear axle. leather proximity key(where you carry a fob and use no key for the vehicle) push button start. and all the usual after that. all for 33k. you couldnt a maxima for that. but its still a hyundai. people cant seem to get that out of there head. we schooled every one else in every aspect of the car. more interior room that a 7 series the the body gaps are closer than a lexus ls. more standard safety features than a benz. hell the v8 can run on regualar gasoline. but its still a hyundai. the genesis is not out there to get people to respect hyundai its just out there to show the other companies that hey we could do that to and better. as far as the realability. hyundai has dropped down a little since in 06. but in 06 were #3 in the world in realability. now were like 10 cuz of all the new models we realesed. (whats with all this we ****, huh?) but yea. nissan did do everything alot earlier that any one else. and thats how they got to where they are now. being different. taking risks. go beer.

As of 2016, I think the closest spiritual successor to the original G50 is the 2014-2017 Chevy SS.
Very low sales, excellent reviews, a driver's car that some car rags have compared to the M5.
It's essentially the exact same size (about 1.5 inches wider), same weight, and is a V8 driving the rear wheels.
Like the G50, it comes with very few options and costs around $45k, but I've heard of people getting them for $39k.
It has magnetic damping and like the G50 is basically in a class of its own.
Like the G50, it is a relatively unknown Marque in this segment, and advertising is essentially nil.
Unlike the q45, the Chevy SS will likely hold its value for quite some time, and is available with a manual transmission:)
