I noticed the other day a icon which looks like a fuel pump on my dash. I never really noticed it before, so I looked it up in manuel. It shows a picture of this and states it is the low fuel indicator light. My car had half a tank of gas, but to be on the safe side I filled the tank, and it showed full. I was wondering was this always there and is it supposed to change color like to yellow or orange, when the fuel is actually low? I just got the car from the shop and they told me that it alwats there and turns orange when fuel is actually low.

The light on the bottom left side of the combination meter should only illuminate when the fuel is <1/4 tank. You may have a problem with the meter it self but there are tests that have to be performed to prove this.

Hi Steve:

I have a 2001 infiniti I30. The Low Fuel indicator is located directly beside the Full mark on the gas gauge. It is the same color as all the markers which idicate fuel levels. I was wondering is it supposed to be illuminated like a different color such as orange or red. I just never noticed it being there before, however since it is located directly where the full mark is,so I may have just never noticed it before. It is in the upper left hand corner of dash, right next to Full . The Nissan dealership told me they could not find anything out of the ordinary with this icon, so that is why I was asking. The other Icons light up when there is a problem, so I just wondered if this did as well

Thanks

Ahh I see what you are talking about now I was looking at the ESM and i see the pump sign there but i do not think that changes color as there is no bulb there. The light I was talking about is directly above the parking brake indicator.

Most cars don't illuminate the low fuel light until you get as low as 3 or 4 gallons (so... around 1/6th tank for the max). Generally the needle will be on or very very near E due to the nonlinearity of the fuel gauge.
