Came back from a 6k trip and my engine used to make very low clicking noise before, but now it got really loud and when I put on park and press on the gas up to 2-3k RPM I hear alot of clicking noise. Is this normal. I did have an oil change 3k miles before and should take it for another saturday.

It's probably the Hamsters that are in there trying to get out. Since the car was built in Mexico they don't use things like metal pistons or fuel injection. They also don't tighten everything because they might have been on siesta during your cars run through the engine section of the factory. Don't worry just pour some Hamster food into the oil fill and rev it a few times to get it good and mixed in!

I sense a trip to the dealer in your future.

Loud clicking is never normal. I'd get to the dealer asap.I don't mean to be insulting, but have you checked the oil level?

this is just a guess but it's likely that you have either an oil leak or someone didn't tighten things like they should have and your lifters are making the clacking noise.

This shouldn't happen to a car under 150k miles

If the oil level is good then I wouldn't waste any time getting it to the dealer. It's hard to tell without hearing the engine. It could be something minor (frayed belt) or it could be something in the valve train. Whatever it is you don't want to risk breakdown and/or doing more damage by ignoring it.

The noise sounds like a faulty hydraulic lifter, and should not be ignored. Take 'er in, mate.

Depending on the severity it could be a bad lifter. Hydraulic lifters are pretty bad when it comes to reliability. Thats why, as far as performance cars go, you usually upgrade to solid lifters, at least in SR20's. Does the noise increase in sound or does the noise accelerate when you increase revs?

No check engine light? You'd think something would have tripped off if it were as bad as a lifter.

The noise accelerates when the RPM goes up. Like when i first got it, there was noise like this, but it was low and it seemed normal, now its more louder. its sounds like tttttttt now its TTTTTTTTT

Is it possible to mess up a hydraulic lifter by putting too much oil in?

I retract my previous statement. These engines do not have hydraulic lifters, they have solid lifters. By the way, did you ever get that fixed??

As far as messing up hydraulic lifters with too much oil? not likely. You're more likely to cause the oil to foam up if the oil level is high enough to cause the crank to splash the oil around. This is bad. HLAs are damaged due to lack of oil, dirty oil, clogged oil ports, and excessively high mileage. They can also go bad due to poor design and engine abuse.

Hey all, I just got a 08 versa used with 11800 miles on it and when it 12k i noticed it was making a loud clicking noise, it almost sounds like there is something plastic loose in the engine compartment

Low grade gas can sometimes cause clicking, especially if it's cheap bargain gas.

Keep in mind, these engines DO make ticking noises. This is from the injectors, valvetrain, EGR, and other vacuum solenoids. Its very hard to describe what noises are normal, and what noises are not.

I always used the highest octane rating gas for my V. Since the day I bought it its been premium 92 octane.

I don't want to sound like a jerk, or a know it all, but the MR18DE engine was designed to run on 87 octane. Some people think that "well, if it runs great on 87, it'll run even better on high-test, right?" Wrong. This is simply not true, and is a complete waste of money. The thing is, the compression ratio is simply not high enough to take advantage of the higher antiknock rating. Remember, high octane fuel is more RESISTANT to combustion. This engine will never knock running on 87 octane. There is also a myth that the higher octane fuels burn cleaner than 87 octane, due to better additive packages. This is also not true. For the most part. If you stick to a quality brand-name fuel, like Mobil/Esso, or Shell, their fuels (all grades) contain excellent detergent packages.

The exception to the above is if you've shaved the heads, run NOS, installed a turbocharger, or whatever .

Hope this make sense!

Higher octane = higher activation energy before the fuel/air mixture detonates...

Unless your Versa has a high compression engine installed - pumping premium = wasting money and screwing up the engine's intended cycle.

Get use to it! I have it on my car....... dealer said "it's normal"... I even tried running Synthetic. It did not make a difference.

I now have 134 000 kms and I don't use up any oil (since I went back to conventional oil)

dealer says its normal for me too The noise started around 55000kms and im now at 84500kms. It has not gotten louder and you can only hear it between idle and 2500rpms.

I have 160000km warranty so ill keep an eye on it.

OK....i have had the same problem and it is now fixed...if yours sounds like a valve tick and gets louder as you drive, but after warmup i didnt really hear it,on mine it was caused by using 93 octane and when changed the oil and i always use royal purple so i used the 5w-30 now its all gone but it had me nervous, but now no sign of faulty, worn,or loose parts i even took off most of the top of the engine found nothing so its an idea anyway for ya

personally i like mobil 1 but everyone has their opinions and preferences. ive rebuilt a couple of my other car motors and they were clean. the rod bearings and main bearings in my boosted gsr motor showed very very any sign of wear and this was after pushing 10 lbs of boost for 75k miles on stock internals. as far as the octane rating, stick with the 87 rating until someone comes out with reflash software to tinker with the ecu or higher compr. pistons along with some bigger cams then u could start using 91 octane or higher.
