OK guys, I ordered a timing chain kit off ebay, and it didn't come with an upper timing chain guide. Where can I get this? It's guide #2 in the picture. Thanks for any help.

you dont need them. you dont need the upper guide and the side guide ( which is the number 2) those guides are the cause of the ticking/ rattle noise.

Well that's good. Is it supposed to have some slack on the upper chain on that side? I'd imagine it would, but just want another opinion. Thanks for the help guys.

please tell me you bought oem parts

unless you plan to do the job over again in a few days?

Do you have a link to the kit you bought? The only aftermarket kit I would trust is SA Gear. Any "Inner Fire Engine" or "Top Line" brand kit is 100% garbage. Not only cheap materials but not even machined properly. I speak from my own bad experience and those of others.

and chain slack is normal, since the tensioner mainly operates with oil pressure.

Is it worthwhile to remove just the top guide? Or would I have to remove both the upper guides to make much difference?

it is very worth you while to remove both upper guides. if they break off they can cause damage to other parts of the motor. an hour of work is worth the safety of my motor

Upper is not needed, when i went to go delete mine i found it already broken off and just resting on the chain. I got lucky.

When was the last time you performed a tuneup? If it's been a while and it isn't running right, replacing your spark plugs, distributor cap & rotor, and then checking/setting mechanical ignition timing should be the first things that come to mind. It could fix you right up, or at least you'd know what the problem is not.

These cars are getting pretty old, and most of them weren't exactly very well maintained. You should really prepare yourself with some basic knowledge before jumping into owning an 18 year old car.

also your problem isn't related to removing those guides.
