I'm new to this forum and recently i purchased 90' 240sx with a RedTop SR20DET. I'm looking into smog options as I have to register it and so far a "Questionable" smog is the only option or just have it as a track only car.

The car runs strong and is mostly stock (exhaust, intercooler, header) it's only 7psi, and I'm pretty sure that it would pass tailpipe.. but I know you cant get a JAP engine smogged. The question is...

Could you put a USD SR20DE out of a Sentra SE-R, NX2000, or Infinity G20 in a 240sx?

Can they be mounted up to a SR20DET transmission to be made RWD?

What are the main differences other than the turbo?

This would be a smog legal swap if I did a full swap, smog equipment and all, I'm pretty sure as it would meet all the criteria to be legal. Then it would just be a matter of swapping headers and turbo and what not when it did not have to be smogged.

Or at least make the motor swap when smog time comes more simple. I live in CALI... so the threat of being pulled over and sent to the REF is constant.

I did not see anything about this when I searched it, maybe i just worded it wrong.

your car does not have a header, and you can't bolt a fwd engine to a rwd transmission. search for reasons why it can't be done and the differences between the two engine setups.

I have the MeganRacing cat-back and the MeganRacing header... technically "exhaust manifold".

Is there a specific reason.... like the output-shaft on the motor not in the same place? I know part wise the 2 engines are almost interchangeable... main differences are internals. So why can't it be mounted longitudinal? Could you at least be slightly more specific.

I've done a swap before, a LT1 from a z28 into a V6 FieroGT ... thats a Longitudinal to Transverse swap... and FR to MR swap. It took some special adapters and a an odd transmission but it was a similar swap. And unlike that one I know the SR20 motor fits in the engine compartment without cutting (cause I have one in there right now).

I've made this comment a million times in RWD SR. The motors are internally the same, but they're not on the outside castings. I've put a FWD head on a RWD block, and nothing comes close to matching. They're even different in the physical dimensions.

Also, the CAS pokes out of the back of the head on the FWD. That would put it in the firewall on a RWD setup. The intake manifold collects from the opposite direction as well. The bellhousing bolt pattern is different. The engine mounting brackets are different.

i was trying not to spoon feed him the info and hoped that his eyes were better than his searching abilities. op, Hijacker just gave your the jist of why it will not work. get your engine running in tip top condition and try and pass smog. if you can't pass, unfortunately it looks as if you are sol.

No it's cool... I searched it more/less specifically...

Main things that make it not work are the Distributor, Intake Manifold direction, Bell-housing pattern, starter location. The motor mounts could always be fab-ed up, and a transmission adapter plate might be able to be made, like on some other motor swaps and off-road uses. But the distributor and the starter cause serious problems. I'm not a fan of cutting the firewall for the distributor.

I was just hoping for a smog legal option thats all.

Could I swap valve covers even? or do they fit different as well?

Enh whatever... I guess every 2 years thats 300-500 down the drain for smog plus any ref and impound tickets I get. Maybe I'll go buy a KA and the smog parts I need so at worst I could swap it back. I'll just work on making it stealthy-er, like recirc-ing the BOV, and getting rid of the nice 3" fart-can muffler and putting a electric cut-out on it instead.

Anybody know a nice quite sounding dual 2inch-ish exhaust that looks stock-ish... (OO) that kinda look?

Dual tip BRM exhaust is pretty damned stealthy IMO. I run one, and it looks close to the stock system.

Cool... how does the BRM sound... pretty quiet? or is it still ricer/racer annoying.

The Apexi one is stealthy-ish but it's still a fart-can muffler, and way to expensive for a cat back. The second a cop sees anything bigger than a tennis ball in diameter on a Nissan they pull you over... LOL.

I'm trying to find the silencer that goes with my System as I did not get it with the car... but alas, it seems that I'll have to order it directly from them or get it custom made.

I've run cut-outs on a few of my cars before, and I think on a turbo car it would be Ideal, I just don't know how bad a restrictive exhaust would be on a turbo that I daily drive. This is my first turbo car, all my others were Bottle-fed or NA.

The BRM sounds very mature when you start comparing exhaust notes. It's not quiet by any means, although at idle, you can barely hear it. Over 3,000 rpms, it wakes up, but it's still way quieter than most systems I've heard over the years. There should be some sound clips in the big BRM sticky

save a 240 buy a honda?

Cool I found some vids... it doesn't sound that bad... I'm gonna look around at some of the local shops here in San Diego and see if anybody has a similar setup. There are 2 Drifting specialty/motor swap shops in my city alone DriftTech and ShogunStyle. both have D1 cars. and one of them owns 3 Skylines and has 2 SR20DET Silvias.. so I'm sure they have a selection of exhausts to listen to.. LOL, cause in person exhaust sounds different then on youtube or streetfire, or anything like that.

Thanks for the input.

I hate to dig this thread up, but damn 300-500 bucks for smog?

you are not shopping very hard

the average is 200. you do not know the right people for sure.

try going into the greater LA area for better deals.

also, the Apexi hybrid megaphone is actually very quiet (about as quiet as it gets)

sure, they completely ****ed by making the MUFFLER chrome and the rest of the exhaust blued steel, but ****:

get a can of brown paint, and spray paint the muffler to make it look "rusted"

I am in the same boat as you unfortunately.

also more advice: dont get a silvia front end, and spray paint your intercooler piping black

I have a black intercooler already so my **** is stealth as hell.
