Older units had a small hole in the top in the center of the conical thingy, (sorry, its late and I can't remember the proper term at the moment).

Later models had a larger diameter hole.

FAST isn't working right now , so I can't check the part number for you, sorry.

Its definitely a RWD in-tank Nissan fuel pump.

How about a pic of the top?

**** I would create a new thread but i cannot with this treo 700wx.. saying something about an icon. so I'm just posting here.****

ok ppl. I am approx 300 miles from home. and I have no choice. I have no computer to do a deep search like I want to. I'm using my pda fone to type this post. I have adobe and microsoft word on it.PROBLEM:I was stupid. I drove my car on empty. I went and accidently put plus in my car. now the car won't start. I dropped octane boosterand fuel injector cleaner in the tank.. kept trying to restart and got nutthing. I then decided to have some ppl look into it for me.. they said my fuel pump was not coming on. when I turn the key to the ON position, fuel pump didn't make a sound. so then I went under the hood.. and I saw two fuel lines one big, one small. the small one was going to the fuel filter. the big one looks like it would coming from fuel tank.. so I toook the big one loose and faced it down and gass started coming out. and it kept pourin out. it kept coming out. but wen I faced the hose up, it never came out.. someone said its supposed to becaue if fuel pump comes on its supposed to have pressure. I tried starting it again... and they said it sounds like its not getting any fire. so my emergency is this. I'm going to buy afuel pump from auto zone .... I need a write up as to how to do it. me and my cousin are going to attempt to change the fuel pump. I just wanna make it back home so I can take the car to the shop andthey can fix anything else I fukt up like plugs and coils and etc. I want to get started by this evening or tomorro if possible. thnx ppl. BTW: I don't know what I'm doing so I will really need a real good instructions from someone who has done this before . thank you.

The FPCU [finned electronic module] [which grounds the fuel pump usually fails before the worn out pump fails] both will need replacing.

Normally one uses a local dealer or Infiniti Specialty shop, as these car require experience , tools, test equipment, and most of all technical expertise.

Owners and incopetent mechanics destroy more Q than worn parts or designs ever do.

Not completely sure what help you're looking for, but all the fuel going into the engine passes through the filter.

IIRC, there is a return line that goes back to the tank, that "may" be the line you're seeing fuel come out of.

Did you check the fuel pump fuse under the dash (Driver's left knee)

Q45Tech:I understnd everything you are saying... but you are not understanding my situation here.. so ill give you a good image. I stay in 77478.. but I'm currently at 75455. all I do out here is work. I know no one else.I don't see much infinitis out here, talk less of a Q45. so I have to DIY. not that I want to, but before I let someone else damage my car, I'd do it myself.

Here's the Fuel Pump Replacement thread:

zerothread?id=6268

And here are a couple threads on diagnosing the FPCU:

zerothread?id=34503

zerothread?id=18148

Hope you can read them on your trio.

ok thnx ppl... as for the fuse on the left knee...I checked the fuel pump fuse and replaced it. I called my mech in houston and he said to check the fuse under the hood. he said I could also go in the trunk and get this white wire in the harness and slit into it and run a separate wire to it and other end to a ground and see if that works... and if it does.. I could probably make it to houston with that. so I'm gonna try hat first too before I try to replace it.

Running the FPCU on high for 5 hours is probably a good way to fry it.

Be sure to change you ways and fill the tank up every few hours to help cool the fuel pump and defer these costly failures especially in warm climates.

FPCU don't usually fail unless the FP is failing and draws too much current.

You want a new pump and O ring from Joe and a {hopefully} known good FPCU from someone on the board.

Both are DIY with excellent writeups liked in my previous posts.

well peoples I got my car back. a lot of things were fixed.. but ill only discuss what this thread is about. to save me money and anger.. my mech has approx 7 Q45. 3 or four he uses for parts. so he gave me one of the fpcu out of it and chargedme 200 dollars for it and installed it. and he also tested it before he put it on. my old fpcu he opend. it had 2 messed up soders. one of em came off and left a hole in the board.. and the board had partly melts from I guess the soder or something.. whateva it I.. that fpcu has had it. He did say one thing tho, fuel pump may be next.

99 out of 100 times the fuel pump causes the FPCU to fail, shutting every thing off.................just like banging on a starter supplying a little extra voltage by grounding the pump directly jumps starts it..............for awhile!

The pump is still bad just works for a time.

When you change FPCU you must change pump otherwise it will just overheat the new FPCU and create the same problem over and over until the old pump itself finally fails.

These situations have been known since 1995 and get repeated over and over again with each used buyer.

You and he don not get it - the fuel pump has already failed and it will kill your replaced FPCU if the fuel pump and O ring is not replaced immmediately!

If your tank has even the slightest hint of film in it (let alone visible gunk) and it is not cleaned along with the fuel lines with the rubber components replaced, it will fail again soon.

And needless to say, a new fuel filter is also always installed.

You know something I've never understood is how the inside of the gas tank gets dirty. I mean, when I clean stuff I use gas?
