I can't put the car in 5th gear! Every time I try, it pops out. Is that a sign that my clutch is going out or already is. I know grinding and gears slipping is a sign to change the clutch. Also BTW it slipped day or two before this happened and the clutch is soft.

yea i think it's a problem with your synchros. and i also dont' think gears grinding and popping out has anything to do with replacing your clutch. if the clutch is slippinghowever, then yes you should change the clutch. but i think ur transmission is the problem here not your clutch.

Thanks for your help, but how I do fix the synchros?

Update: I took the car for a test run and it only goes in 5th if I double clutch or I wait for the RPMs to Drop. When I quick shift, it pops out!

if it only goes in if you double clutch then i'm PRETTY sure its ur synchros. but some1 correct me if i'm wrong. and i dont think you can just replace the synchros, probably have to tear down the transmission and get it rebuilt, it might be cheaper if you pick up a spare m/t transmission and swap over if it really bothers you.

yea some insight would be fabulous on this... mine does it into 2nd @ high RPM, periodically into 4th and ayn RPM, and most of the time when i pull it out of reverse, it just gets stuck and the shifter wont go anywhere unless i giggle it around for a few seconds...

SO, how FVCK3D am i?

ok so here is the deal pick a day and take your transmission out. its real easy and you can do it by yourself if you have any muscle at all. lol take it apart cause its super easy. check it out. see if there is anything worn badly. my transmission popped out of 5th gear too.... i had a broken 5th/reverse shift fork. simple fix i got a new transmission. and yes you can fix your synchros but it requires a lot more work. your have to get new ones.. anyways just take it apart and figure it out its real easy. also a cause of it popping out of gear is worn shift forks

Thanks guys for all your input. It looks like I have to wait until after finals to take a look at it. BTW since I'm saving up to turbo my car and install new clutch, what would be easier replace transmission or rebuild.

as said before. If you have to let your rpms drop... definately synchronizer. I dont know about these cars, but usually 5th gear is by itself. By that i mean sometimes gears share one...5th doesnt??? Someone who is more informed in this field can either confirm or deny any truth to that about these cars.

^Unless you rebuild it yourself it would be cheaper to get a used one (shops at least around here) want your left nut to rebuild one.

The best thing to do is buy a cheap KA trans and swap the parts over that are bad.

you say ur going to go turbo soon, so that means ka-t or sr? if sr dont spend any money on this b/c most likely the sr will come w/ the transmission.

Real easy huh? Thats why you replaced the whole transmission for the sake of a single shift fork.

WHY do you dolts insist on being moronic double-clutchers? It doesnt do a damn thing unless you own a vehicle from the ancient era of motoring...

GOD FREAKING DAMN.

^^^ i think he was insinuating that he HAS to double clutch in order to get it into 5th gear. not that he does on a daily basis.

reeeeeeeead the post first.

Hey, I say what I think. I don't assume the kid is double clutching just to switch into 5th. He only states that it will engage IF he double clutches.

Excuuuuuuuuuuussssse me.

No I have not looked at it yet because I have finals. I was leaning on rebuilding the transmission cause one if I replace it I don't know how good the new(used) transmission is and how long it will last me. Second is since I getting new clutch plate, flywheel and turbing my car (KA-T), I want something that will take the abuse.

Just an FYI.

I have been having this issue with my 1991 SER 2.0L, but apparently it happens with the 1.6 as well. It is the synchros. There is a kit to fix it.

Here are a couple of links that might help.

LOL! My thread is still going on! I decided not to rebuild the transmission... too much $$. I ordered a used transmission from one of the NICO guys! I'm waiting for it now. When I get it I'll swap the transmission and install new clutch and flywheel!!
