1991-1994 240sx: Differential fluid change tutorial

Return to tutorial index

oil
You need 2.75 american pints or 1.3 liters.
I used 80w-90 gear oil designed for GL4 and GL5 applications. The differential is GL-5. Some people use 75w-90 for cooler climates. My oil was good for tranny ,too, but yours might not be as the tranny needs GL-4 oil.
(you could heat new oil with hot water so it flows easier)

(Note: if you have lsd, you need 1.5 liters)

Tools

-$10 fluid pump
-4 ft of 3/8 inch (inside diameter)clear tubing $4
-carb cleaner( to clean plug and surrounding area)
-1/2 inch ratchet wrench(you are sticking the .5 inch male adapter into the plug as it is an inny)(its actually .51 inches or 13mm so people tend to strip-maybe wrap thin cloth around socket)
-a long handle for ratchet for more leverage(if needed) or hammer
-container to collect old fluid
-high temp silicone for plugs

Procedure

Pretty easy. You dont need to jack car up as there is lots of room in back.
Some people try to gravity fill from the wheel well but I think the pump is much better idea. You can use pump for tranny oil change too.

1. Drive car around in gear to get the oil heated so it drains.
2. Park car in flat area. important
3.Loosen the fill plug first to make sure you can get it out to refill. You can access this from behind the driver side rear tire with 4 inch extention
4. Remove drain plug and drain fluid.
5. Replace drain plug.(after cleaning and silicone)
6. Stick clear tubing securely in fill hole.
7. Pump oil into fill hole until it starts to spill out of hole. (Try to use a clear container to pump from and measure out the 1.3 liters ahead of time. The spill method, however, is probably fine)
8.Replace fill plug.
9.Torque plugs to spec.

Torque specs : differential drain and fill plug: 29-43 ft lb

Do you have LSD

You can tell by where the drain plug is. LSD has drain plug on bottom while normal differential has it on side.

DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER:
normal-(R200) 2-3/4 pints 1.3 liters
LSD-(R200V) 3-1/8 pints 1.5 liters

Do you have LSD

You can tell by where the drain plug is. LSD has drain plug on bottom while normal differential has it on side.

I'm not so sure on that one. On my S14 the filler and drain is in the same place, I damn sure don't have VLSD.

HOLY ****!! That means your 240 was the 12th 240sx made out of the first 88 promotional manufactured batch in 1990.

Give us some pics of your vehicle please, that thing's history.
