I have an 2002.Disconnect connection to throttle body. Spray MAF sensor cleaner on the sensor, little squirts from different directions, not blasting at close range.

(Auto parts store sells this and directions on can. Dont use carb cleaner OR throttle body cleaner-Oils leave residue. Read can closely.

Let dry. Plug in again.

Throttle body-you can clean it from outside side, or remove 4 bolts and a few small hoses, and get it better and from both sides.

If you clean it on there, spray on a paper towel, wipe as much as possible prior, then spray and open and close flap to dislodge more. Spray, hold flap open, let drain back down hill. If you have major buildup, I would do it right before oil change probably.

q tips and just clean as good as you can.

If you remove the throttle body, there is a gasket you might need to replace. I used RTV red actually, but don't know about how correct this is. It did work fine.

Use Search feature to find exact info on how to do this on Nico Site in future prior to questions.

It's a good idea to disconnect your battery the night before unplugging your MAF just to make sure that there is absolutely NO electrical curren in there, as unplugging it with current will fubar it.. I know, I unplugged it while the engine was running and needed a new one, the price? the equivalent of US$700, and that was with an industry discount!!!However, once learned, I clean the MAF every 6 months, when changing oil and filters, and it keeps the engine nice and level, no fluctuations, cutting-out or loss of power.

I know this is a old topic, But I have to clean my MAF.

With that said, I read a couple things on this Forum, but none were very detailed.

I want to make sure I don't damage the MAF. So in this Tread, one stated

"Disconnect connection to throttle body. Spray MAF sensor cleaner on the sensor, little squirts from different directions, not blasting at close range"

Must you remove the entire MAF assembly to clean the MAF? OR it can be sprayed installed? as that is what I gathered from the previous quote.

Also, getting a bit more detail on where to spray would be great.

Again, please forgive the dumb Questions, but as you know these MAF are not cheap. So I don't want to damage it.

there are no dumb questions, only dumb abswers. as asked, where exactly to spray. there are 2 spots that need to be cleaned, they are the metal strips. one is a flat strip in a tunnel of sorts about an inch from the bottom of the sensor, that is where it measures the moving air. it compares that measurement (i believe it uses temp for the measurement) to the stationary static strip just below that tunnel in a cave of sorts, about half an inch from the bottom of the sensor. basically the difference in temp between the 2 strips allows it to calculate air volume. oil and residue especially on the large tunnel strip will insulate the metal and give it false (and lower air volume) readings. clean it until its mirror shiny. i used a small strip of lint free cloth to buff it completely clean after spraying with kleen-flo air intake cleaner. so far so good.

edit: to add, unplugging while the motor is running and key on is not advised, witht he key off there is no power to the device and unplugging it then is not going to harm anything. there are no capacitors or any internal wiring that keeps residual voltage.
