I am about to get some new tiers and was wondering if anyone saw a problem with having wider tires in the rear than the front for more grip. Say 215 or 225 tires in the rear and 205 up in the front. both over 40, so 205/40/ R17 in the front and 225/40/ R17 in the back. will this cause any problems?

Thanks.

most people run a little wider in the rear than the front. i personally run 215 in front and 235 in the back.

theres no reason to run a staggerd tire set-up unless you have a staggard wheel set-up.

ah I see...

dude, 205/40/17 and 215/40/17's on a 17x8/9 is gonna look goofy. Stretch is pretty massive and sidewall is too small... if anything, 215/45 and 225/45 would be a better match if you're looking for a bit of a stretch..

Sorry guys, i guess i jumped the gun here. I am not a tire guy and didn't realize that rims came in different widths. I have 4 rims and i believe they are all identical. I will have to measure them. From where to where do i measure them? inside to inside or outer rim to outer rim? Thanks guys. Oh and how big of a tire fits on a 240 lowered 2" without rolling the fenders? and how do you roll fenders?

Thanks a bunch!

outer rim to outer rim - 1" = wheel width.

you really need to switch to a 245/40/17.

those are some lopsided tire diameters you're riding on right now.

I dont understand you point here. He is running 45 and 55 thicknesses, why a 40?

there is almost a full 1" difference in diameter between his front and rear wheels.

right now, his rear tires spin faster than his fronts. that may be a factor as to why he has no traction in the front.

a 245/40 in the rear would put both tire diameters much closer together. they would then be spinning at roughly the same speed.

I see your point now. Although would it not be best to go for the 245/35/17. This will bring him within 2mm of each other?

245/45/17= 110.25mm245/40/17= 98mm245/35/17= 85.75

205/55/16= 112.75mm - 25mm for the 1 difference in rim = 87.75

The 245/35/17 is a much closer match is it not? I may be doing something wrong though... Let me know.

the width is not what you need to focus on. it's the overall tire diameter.

205/55/16 = 24.9"

245/45/17 = 25.7"245/40/17 = 24.7"245/35/17 = 23.8"

245/40/17 has the closest diameter to the front 205/55/16.

as insignificant as it may seem, the inch difference in the 245/45 and the 245/35 is very noticeable to the naked eye.

that's why !240RB!'s looks like it has that nhra funny car stance to it.
