Now I am a civialian, been out for over a ****ing decade and I just had to send a frantic email to my HRO section head begging for a chit to take my wife to ****ing dinner for our first anniversary. I hope it gets approved but if it doesn't I am going anyway, let the chips fall where they may. I could be fired from my job for going against this stupidity.

Forgive me if this a stupid question, but. . . .If you are no longer in the service how can they restrict your movement? From what most of my ex-military wo-workers say, you never really are out, Uncle same can always change his mind. Is that the case? Or are you inactive, reserve or something. Or am I missing it all together?

And Congrats on the anniversary!

They can pull my sofa status. The military says what to do, my company says "yes sir" and gives me a directive. If I don't comply that gives them grounds to fire me and then I am out on the street doing construction work for 6 bucks an hour like when I first came back here.I straddle the fence, I work on base which gives me substantial advantages that would dissaper if I lost the status. The military is beginning to issue addendums to the order. They thought they could do a lot more than they can. They are starting to realize when they tell a spouse who happens to be sofa but also happens to be Japanese where they can go and what they can do she is going to say "**** you, this is my country jackass"

Yeah Mike, I'm a little lost on that one too? You have to get permission, even though you aren't in the service? Does it have something to do with your civilian status/visa/US citizen/not Japanese citizen?

***EDIT***

Okay, you type faster...

Sorry to hear bro. Hope they relax a little. Congrats on the anniversary.

That's really a shame to hear. Esp. for you TMS, but I've heard a lot about troops from the base(s) having a "night out" and it turning into something else entirely fairly often. I can't say I don't agree w/ their outrage (if those rumors I heard are indeed true). I hope this works itself out peacefully.

So can I still visit? I'm planning on going to Kyoto as a graduation present to myself next year. I suppose since I'm female I might not get any backlash/snubbed vs. if I were an American male?

Congrats on the Anniversary btw. (although it's a crappy turn of events)

quite a striking double standard isnt it TMS, I've heard many a story's about the older japanese men and their infactuation w/ upskirts and or groping ( i cannot verify the legitamacy as i only spent a year there and never witnessed it). On another note, the rape issues and many others have happened quite a few times before. It seems somewhat common practice for every 3-5 years some dumb *** american goes over there and thinks he can do what he wants. When i first got to iwakuni, there was a big deal about a Marine whom had knocked out a member of the Yakuza during the Cherry blossom festival in Iwakuni. The military was trying to find him and get him sent back stateside before the Yakuza got ahold of him. Rules and situations like this would be avoidable if morons werent allowed to be stationed overseas.

Good luck with your chit, maybe you could get a job working at one of the shops there, your pretty good at fabrication and all the like, and you being an american may open up a new avenue of business w/ the military personell allowed to drive where you are

Let me show you the hipocracy of this thing. This is an japanese news agency who is nice enough to post stories in english. Good thing all us americans are locked dow. There will be no crime now.

This is only page onehttp://mdn.mainichi.jp/

http://mdn.mainichi.jp/national/news/20 ... .htmlQuote »Juvenile abuse, kiddy p0rn victims hit record highs

Arrests for child abuse cases last year rose marginally to be the highest ever on record, the National Police Agency said.

And although arrests for incidents related to child pornography and juvenile prostitution declined in 2007, the number of child victims of pornography increased by 20.2 percent to 304.

Better news for crimefighters came in the form of the number of children who died as a result of abuse last year, falling by 37.3 percent to 37.

"While society has developed a greater awareness of the existence of child abuse and this has led to more reports about cases, we strengthened the support network with places like child consultation centers and acted quickly," an NPA spokesman said.

Police said there were 300 cases in 2007 where there were either arrests made or offenders were sent to prosecutors for child abuse, an increase of 1 percent over the previous year and the highest ever figure since records began in 1999. The number of reported child victims was 315, a 0.3 percent fall from 2006.

Last year also witnessed 1,914 cases of violation of the law banning child prostitution and child pornography, which was a 14.1 percent decline from 2006.

NPA officials said that of the 315 child abuse victims, 224 had been assaulted or battered, 69 subjected to sexual abuse and 22 neglected. Of the victims, 47 were aged under 1, 25 were aged 5 and 24 were 3 years old.

Mothers were the most frequent child abusers, with 97 arrested for harming their children, followed by 91 fathers, 55 step-parents and 46 common-law fathers.

Of the 1,347 people police arrested in child abuse cases, 984 were sent to prosecutors. Of 567 child pornography arrests, 377 were sent to prosecutors.

There were 1,160 children who fell victim in child prostitution, and 304 victimized by child pornography.

Juvenile crimes, meanwhile, fell, with 103,224 people picked up for breaking the Criminal Code, a decline of 8.5 percent and the fourth year in a row that the figure has fallen.
http://mdn.mainichi.jp/national/news/20 ... .htmlQuote »Matchmaking site arrests down, but juvenile victims as high as ever

The number of cases where people were taken into custody for violating laws related to online personals declined last year, but the number of juvenile victims embroiled in these cases became proportionately higher, the National Police Agency said.

Last year, there were 1,753 cases where police made arrests or reported people to prosecutors for breaking laws related to the regulation of matchmaking sites, a decrease of 162 cases compared to 2006.

But the 1,100 juveniles involved in these cases was only a margin decrease on the 1,153 children caught up the previous year, giving crimefighters cause for alarm.

"The number of children falling victim is still too high," an NPA spokesman said.

Police said of the arrests, there were 122 cases where people were taken in for breaking the online personals regulation law by encouraging juveniles to have sex, an increase of 75 instances more than the previous year. There were 61 cases where the child had been the instigator, up from 43 in 2006.

There were 848 juvenile victims in cases related to matchmaking sites, a decline of eight on the year earlier. Two of the victims were elementary school pupils.

NPA officials plan to combat problems related to online personals sites by tightening the laws regulating them. They have decided to revise the law to make it compulsory for site operators to register with prefectural public safety commissions. Site operators will also be obligated to remove any posts that may encourage children to become involved in illegal activities.
http://mdn.mainichi.jp/national/news/20 ... .htmlQuote »Bureaucrat arrested with 100 tapes filled with hidden camera footage

YACHIMATA, Chiba -- A Yachimata Municipal Government worker who has admitted to installing hidden cameras in public toilets for years has been arrested, police said.

Kenji Akiba, 30, the government worker, was arrested for trespassing.

A subsequent raid on his home and workplace unearthed over 100 videotapes or DVDs containing footage obtained from hidden cameras.

Akiba admits to the allegations against him.

"I did it because it's my hobby," he told the police. "I've been collecting dirty footage from hidden cameras for about two to three years."

Police said the specific case for which the government official was arrested involved placing a hidden camera in a unisex toilet at a convenience store in Yachimata on the afternoon of Oct. 17.

Police said the store manager noticed a strange deodorizer in the toilet that they had not put there and revealed upon closer examination to contain a camera. The store manager notified the police.

The camera hidden in the deodorizer was wireless and transmitted images several dozen meters.
http://mdn.mainichi.jp/national/news/20 ... .htmlQuote »Miyazaki court jails repeat sex attacker for 18 years

MIYAZAKI -- A man who preyed on lonely hearts, using the threat of the yakuza to get them into his clutches and then unleashing sex attacks on the women has been jailed for 18 years by the Miyazaki District Court.

Yoshimasa Ono, 34, was found guilty of a series of sex-related crimes, including indecent assault, on five women and ordered to spend 18 years behind bars.

"You showed scant respect for women's characters and their dignity and there is no room for leniency," Presiding Judge Masayoshi Takahara said as he handed down the ruling.

During a period from May to July 2006, Ono used online matchmaking sites to meet five women. He would typically force them into his car by telling them gangsters were waiting for them and they needed to go and see them. Once the women were in his car, he would force indecent acts on them and rob them.

Defense lawyers had argued during the trial that in the case of four of the five women who accused Ono of indecent assault sex had occurred, but they had consented to it because they were lonely.

The court, however, dismissed these arguments.

"Testimony from the women has been concrete, detailed and is reliable," Takahara said.
http://mdn.mainichi.jp/national/news/20 ... .htmlQuote »Cops wipe out large-scale illegal p0rn ring

Two people who run an illegal pornographic DVD sales operation that netted them about 10 million yen in sales in a little over two months have been arrested, police said.

Arrested for possession of indecent images with intent to sell were Hitoshi Watanabe, 28, a video store operator from Kimitsu, Chiba Prefecture, and one other person whose identity has not been disclosed.

Police also seized about 27,000 porno DVDs from the pair.

Police said the specific charge for which the two were arrested involved their possession of seven illegal DVDs in a store and about 27,000 uncensored pornographic DVDs stored in preparation for sale in an apartment in Tokyo's Toshima-ku on Feb. 14.

Police said Watanabe had a catalog of pornographic movies which he left in his store and would bring DVDs from storage upon receiving an order from a customer. Police have not found any equipment for recording the movies, so they suspect the illegal p0rn ring was run from somewhere else other than Watanabe's store.
I feel safer, because my front door is locked and these freaks are out there!

That's what really burns my ***, the two-faced facet of it. Rape is no joke and I hope that ****er, if he is in fact guilty, is getting some hide the kendo stick action right now but be consistent. Every day I read stories about terrible stuff happening and nobody seems to care. Kids are whored out by their parents to the Yaks to repay debts, babys cook in cars while their parents play pachenko, punk kids run amok and nothing is done to them because they are "juveniles" and "we don't want to stain thier academic records", the unempoyment rate keeps getting worse and the economy is for **** but do we lift a finger to help? No, we play this game every year or so. Some young dumb jack off steps on his crank outside the fence and we all have to endure the BS, the additional scrutiny, the dirty looks etc. When my wife is out alone I am not worried about some drunk servicemember, I am worried about some creepy little Japanese guy who has been taught through domestic media and social stereotypes that women are things and like being raped and abused. searched "rape" and this is just Feb, let's take a walk on the dark side.

Noriyoshi Sakae, 24, an employee at the broadcaster's Tokyo branch, stands accused of rape. He suggested that he was involved in the incident.

"I can't clearly remember what I did because I was drunk. But I remember that I went into a woman's room," his lawyer quoted him as saying.

"It happened quite a long time ago, so I'll tell you about it once I remember what I did," Nakajima was quoted as telling investigators.

The new arrest warrant accuses Nakajima of attempting to rape a female employee in her 20s at his office on the morning of May 7, 2005, investigators said. A former doctor who allegedly tried to rape a nurse after giving her an injection of what appeared to be sleeping medicine has been arrested, police said.

Arrested on suspicion of crimes including rape resulting in injury was Akira Yamazaki, 35, a former cardiovascular surgeon at Tokyo Women's Medical University Hospital. He has denied the allegations against him.

Investigators accuse Yamazaki of injecting what appeared to be sleeping medicine into the body of a nurse in her 20s who was taking a nap in a hospital conference room in Tokyo's Shinjuku-ku at about 2 a.m. on Dec. 11 last year, while she was on night shift, and trying to rape her.

When the nurse realized what was happening and resisted, Yamazaki allegedly hit her in the face, leaving her with injuries that required a week's treatment.

Tokyo Women's Medical University Hospital sacked Yamazaki on Dec. 26 last year.
http://mdn.mainichi.jp/culture....htmlQuote »Skinhead salesman's drunken dark side outed in string of sex crimesFriday (2/22)Friday (2/22)

A TV ad salesman best known for shaved head and drunken metamorphoses has become the prime suspect in a series of rapes that had women in central Tokyo terrorized, Friday (2/22) says.

Noriyoshi Sakae was arrested Jan. 30 for the rape of a Tokyo woman and sacked from his job selling advertising air time for Nagasaki TV the following day.

The 24-year-old denies the allegations against him.

"I was blind drunk and have absolutely no recollection of the time. I don't remember a thing," Friday quotes the suspect telling the police about the alleged sex attack.

Those who know Sakae say they're not surprised to see him in trouble.

"Sakae sold ads, and every time there was a party among people in the business he was invariably there. But he was quiet and ordinary. He never stood out, except for his shaved head. But one night last year, he called this woman from another company at about 3 in the morning and told her he was going over to her place right away. It scared her out of her wits," an advertising agency employee associate of the suspect's tells Friday.

"His behavior that night was so unlike the impression I normally had of him, so I talked to him a few days later and his response was exactly the same as what he told the cops after his arrest: he said he was too drunk to remember anything."

Others cast doubts over Sakae's character because of his trademark shaved head, traditionally a sign of atonement in Japan.

"If he was supposed to be a serious type of guy, why was he late for work every morning? I've heard he was made to shave his head to apologize for being late to work every day. I've talked to people who were close to him and they say he was a nice guy as long as he didn't drink," a Nagasaki TV insider says to the weekly. "The case he was arrested for involved something that happened at 5 in the morning. I suspect he may have been the type who'd go out drinking to all hours of the morning, get a bit of booze bluster and then go 'hunting' for women."

In recent months, there have been three unsolved cases of indecent assault occur in the same apartment building where Sakae's alleged rape victim lives. Sakae's DNA matches that from bodily fluids taken from the woman, and police are confident they have found the man they're looking for.

"There was an indecent assault in the same apartment building on Dec. 28," a police officer tells Friday. "And there are signs that Sakae was in the place where it happened."
http://mdn.mainichi.jp/nationa....htmlQuote »Sneakers, gumshoe's fleet footwork saw Sapporo's serial rapist snaredThe convenience store where police got their break in the quest to hunt down the rapist terrorizing women in Sapporo's Shiroishi-ku. (Mainichi)The convenience store where police got their break in the quest to hunt down the rapist terrorizing women in Sapporo's Shiroishi-ku. (Mainichi)

SAPPORO -- A pair of sneakers that left a mysterious footprint at the scene of a series of rapes that terrorized Sapporo's Shiroishi-ku ultimately led to the alleged perpetrator's arrest, it has been learned.

Police were able to pinpoint the exact kind of sneakers the purported serial rapist was wearing.

And constant surveillance of citizens' shoes over a prolonged period finally led to an arrest.

"You've got no idea how many pairs of shoes I stared at on the streets," the 39-year-old Hokkaido Prefectural Police sergeant credited with the arrest of confessed serial rapist Makoto Tsurusawa said. "There was no way I was ever going to give up. I promised the victims I would keep going until I'd arrested a suspect."

The sergeant's break came on the night of Nov. 19 last year. He was outside a convenience store in Shiroishi-ku when a man drove up in a navy colored expensive Japanese car. As he got out of the vehicle, the sergeant stared at his feet and was shocked to notice the man wearing shoes just like those in the photos police had distributed of the footwear used by the sex attack perpetrator.

The sergeant followed the man into the store and, as they passed by, took a closer look at his shoes. He was convinced the sneakers were the same as the wanted man's. When the man left the store, the sergeant tried to stop and question him, but the man got into his vehicle and sped off at a furious pace. The sergeant, however, had taken down the license number of the car and it was easy for the cops to track down the vehicle owner, who admitted to the series of assaults, police said.

The Shiroishi Police Station had employed 240 officers on the case and carried out investigations 24 hours a day. They continued their search for the rapist at all hours of the day, using warmers to fight the onset of the cold the northernmost prefecture's capital is well known for.

Tsurusawa, a construction industry worker from Shiroishi-ku, eventually told police investigators he had committed 14 rapes or broken into homes to indecently assault women. He was arrested for and been charged with four counts of rape, with charges to be pursued in the remaining 10 cases, police said.
And here is ours, the one that is plastered all over the media while the rest don't seem to rate much attention.http://mdn.mainichi.jp/culture....htmlQuote »Details emerge of Okinawan girl's alleged rape encounter with "terrifying" Marine

U.S. Marines are dangerous, screams Shukan Shincho (2/21) and the junior high schoolgirl knew that for sure, but still ended up going along with the staff sergeant now under arrest for raping her -- a charge he vehemently denies.

U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Tyrone Luther Hadnott apparently met the 14-year-old girl the weekly refers to by the pseudonym "Chiaki Hibi" in a place called Koza Music Town, an entertainment area in the city of Okinawa.

At about 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 10, Hadnott rode into the area on his Harley Davidson and began talking to a group of three schoolgirls, including Chiaki, who had just attended a fashion show at Koza Music Town.

"Chiaki was originally part of a group of five, but by 8:30 there were only three of them still hanging out together. Hadnott asked Chiaki something like where she'd bought the knit hat she was wearing. They got talking in a mix of English and Japanese, and after about four or five minutes, Chiaki asked him if he'd give her a ride on his bike as a joke. He said 'OK,' and that's how she got on the bike," an investigation insider tells Shukan Shincho.

The girl apparently thought the Marine would give her a lift home. Her two friends assumed she was only going for a joyride and would come back in 10 minutes at most.

"The bike headed off to Kitanakagusuku, a kilometer away, where Hadnott's home is," the insider says.

Kitanakagusuku was once mostly inhabited by non-Japanese, the vast majority of them associated with the U.S. military in Okinawa. Now, however, there is also a strong mix of Japanese living in the district, the weekly notes. Hadnott lived in the district with a Japanese wife, from whom he has been separated for about two years. One of his neighbors described the staff sergeant for the magazine.

"He's well-built, standing over 180 centimeters tall. He's a fair-skinned black guy who looks more like a Caucasian. If you met him, he'd say things in Japanese like 'konnichiwa (hello),' 'atsui desu ne (it's hot isn't it?)' and the like. But then, I remember his TV antenna blew down in a typhoon and he said 'antenna ga kowarechatta (my antenna's busted),' so I figured he spoke quite a bit of Japanese," the neighbor tells Shukan Shincho. "For some reason, he shared his house with an older white guy. They were always taking all these Japanese women in their 20s into the house."Tyrone Luther Hadnott, the U.S. Marine accused of raping a junior high school girl.Tyrone Luther Hadnott, the U.S. Marine accused of raping a junior high school girl.

Hadnott allegedly took Chiaki into the house, too.

"For about 20 minutes, he tried to pressure Chiaki into a physical relationship, but she kept refusing and couldn't stop crying. She said she wanted to go and ran out of the house, heading into a grove nearby. Hadnott ran after her, saying he'd take her home in his car. But when they did get into the vehicle, he didn't head for her home in (the city of) Okinawa, but went to (the nearby town of) Chatan instead. Chiaki got a moment to herself and called a male friend on her mobile phone. She begged him for help, but couldn't tell him where she was because she didn't know herself," the investigation insider says. "The phone stayed connected for a short while before the friend on the other end of the line heard someone say 'Shaddup,' something like a slapping sound, then some English and music before the line went dead about 30 minutes later."Shukan Shincho (2/21)Shukan Shincho (2/21)

At about the same time back in Koza Music Town, the male friend Chiaki called had met up with the two buddies she had been with when Hadnott came along. The three realized something was amiss. Eventually, they contacted the girl's relatives and, just before 10:30 that night, arrived at Okinawa Police Station. While they were there, Chiaki called and said she was in a park in Chatan. Officers raced to the scene and heard Chiaki's side of what had happened to her.

Based on her statements, they went to Hadnott's Kitanakagusuku home and found a black station wagon the girl had talked about. They also found Hadnott, who admitted he had taken the girl in his car. He would later be arrested for raping her.

"It's ironic this case began at Koza Music Town," Okinawa-based journalist Ryunosuke Megumi tells Shukan Shincho. "After a black American soldier raped a woman a few years ago, the Japanese government, which is responsible for the bases, paid for the area to be built with taxpayers' money as a form of apology."

The magazine promptly rattles off a litany of sex crimes U.S. military members have committed in Okinawa over the past few years.

Those in Koza Music Town say the tragic case would never have happened had Hadnott approached a local girl.

"While kids born in Koza know what benefits the bases have brought the area, they also know really well just how scary the American military can be," a Koza shop owner tells Shukan Shincho. "There's always a tension in the air when dealing with the American soldiers and none of the local girls would ever think about going off with someone in the U.S. military on a whim."

A lawyer based in the city of Okinawa tells a slightly different story.

"Apart from some areas, there are lots of girls around who want to use the English they've studied at school and the best way for them to do that is have a chat with a handsome American soldier," he says.

When told the alleged victim came from distant Ginowan and not Koza, the shop owner was not surprised.

"It simply wouldn't happen to anyone who grew up in Koza," the retailer tells Shukan Shincho. "The bases near Ginowan aren't anywhere near the size of the ones here in Koza. I'd say she probably went with the guy because, unlike the kids from around here, she simply didn't know how terrifying the American soldiers are."
It's people like that that are part of the reason I try to not hang out with military people off base. I have seen to many complete idiots down at Daikoku doing stuff that they think is cool, but to many of the people there, it's stupid. I am not saying all military, but some.

Now, even though what happened in Oki is pretty farked up, immagine what would have happened if it would have been a civilian. Military people are lucky. I have heard stories about foreigners being stuck in Japanese jails, and the stories aren't good.

You get busted for a crime like rape over here, kiss your social life good-bye, cause I highly doubt your gonna find a lawyer to defend you over here, and if you do, it's not to likely that you're gonna have much luck in your trial.

Sounds like a bunch of old people are biased against America for one reason or another. Do all the "terrifying" American soldiers just happen to live in Japan, or am I lucky just to not meet them here?

that and as a deterant to North Korea, Given that Japan is a 15 minute fighter jet ride away give or take some, and that Korea has in the last year launched rockets into the sea of Japan, it very well could be our first wave of defense if North Korea decides to get froggy.

In addition if Japan were to be invaded US forces would be essentially the only defense. To my knowledge Japan has a very limited Navy and an even smaller land force. (dont quote me on this part, im going off of what i was told when i was stationed in Japan)

Just an FYI

A lot of the stuff posted in here sounds a LOT like Singapore. I used to live there and before I went there I heard nothing about all that and as soon as I got there its all over the papers. Serial rapists, murder, and child-related crimes (all punishable by death FYI) are RAMPANT over there. They just tend to keep it very hush-hush so surrounding countries and such dont hear about it.

But this whole Japan business is bumming me out... I've been 4 times over the last few years and I was hoping to get there after Germany this summer but that might be out of the question...

For people comming over as a civilian, you'll have no problems. It's just for military or anyone attached to the commands down in Oki. Mainland is still green light.

Another little know reason for us being here is to "protect our foreign intrests".

After the war, we occupied to make sure that Japan followed the rules of the treaty they signed, and we just never left.

IMO, I don't think Japan would ever do anything controversial should we ever un-occupy, but I would rather not find out otherwise.

Same sorta thing happened when I was in Oki in 2000. Some young Marine got drunk, stumbled into someone's house and fell asleep in their daughter's room. No rape was involved, but we all got put on lock down. It gives the Okinawan's more reason to boot us off the island.

I got lucky and no dumb sh*t happend when I was in oki. I rememebr hearing word though about giving Camp Foster back to the Japanese and moving a bunch of Marines to Guam. Im sure that will make them happy, even though there will still be a lot of military there.
