2008 New York Auto Show: Nissan To Take Wraps off Redesigned 2009 Maxima

NASHVILLE, Tennessee — Nissan is not even planning to hold a press conference at next week's 2008 Detroit Auto Show. Instead, it is saving all of its firepower for the 2008 New York Auto Show, where it plans to unveil a completely redesigned 2009 Maxima, a Nissan spokesman confirmed on Thursday.

"We'll show the next Maxima in New York and a couple of other things — but not concepts," Nissan North America spokesman Darryll Harrison told Inside Line. Harrison described the '09 Maxima as "all new" but would not divulge any other details. He also added that Nissan will have a fairly low profile at February's 2008 Chicago Auto Show. Media days at the 2008 New York Auto Show kick off on March 19.

The current Maxima was last redesigned in 2004. It is considered one of Nissan's most historic vehicles and was known originally as the Datsun 810. It was rechristened "Maxima" in 1982.

Hmm. What I can see there looks much better than I feared. Definitely has potential. Now we just have to wait...

I really like what I can see of the headlights.

Only thing that really worries me is the apparently droopy rear deck. One thing that really differentiated the A34 Maxima from it's other big, round sedan brethren was the flat rear deck. If Nissan ruins this with a downward sloping trunk lid or a bangle butt I'm going to be mad.

Looking good so far!

Great profile, clean lines, NO rubber economoulding on the doors!

I really like the clean, defined nose. It looks really good and gives the car a more aggressive look.

Looks like a tasteful progression of the current look. Still retains all the things I like about it though.

Only thing I can find that I don't particularly like is the apparently short decklid and possible bangle butt. That could just be the spoiler and masking creating an illusion, though. And even if it's not an illusion, it's the most attractive short-decklid bangle butt I've ever seen (out of context that might sound a bit odd...).

Nissan needs to step its game up and make it full size and RWD.

The Cima wasn't the death of the RWD Nissan. Remember the M is the Fuga elsewhere.

A North American RWD Nissan is highly unlikely thanks to Nissan's misguided devotion to complete separation of Nissan and Infiniti lines (where do you think the I went?)

Expect AWD with the 7th gen, though.

From what I can see, it doesn't really look any different than the 08, other than the grill of course. I guess I might change my mind once I see it without camo.

Honestly, if it looks anything like the outgoing model, then the 08 Altima is still the direction I'm headed.

Nothing against the current Max, but the interior dimensions aren't really much different than the Altima, so I can't justify an extra $5,000 or so. It seriously looks like the rear door cuts into the wells just as much as the current Max.

I'm not going to pay a premium for a Maxima, if they're just going to bring it up to par with the Altima by adding a backup camera, push button, and touchscreen nav (they have to get rid of that joystick). Yeah, yeah, yeah...heated steering wheels and memory seats just don't do it for me.

Also, that article says Fall, but I guess I thought they would get it to market by July to get the summer sales.

Information on the diesel version:

The 3.0-liter V6 dCi Concept. The V6 dCi Concept is a preview of a coming new generation of 3.0-liter V6 diesel engines. The new 2,993cc block is derived from the 2.0 dCi engine, with which it shares 25% of its components. The engine develops 195 kW (261 hp) of power and maximum torque of 550 Nm (406 lb ft) at 1,750 rpm with targeted CO2 emissions of less than 200g/km.

The common rail fuel injection system uses two rails pressurized at 1,800 bar which supply 7-hole piezo-electric injectors. This configuration supports up to five injections per cycle. "Ultra-fast" ceramic technology glow plugs enable almost instantaneous preheating and cold starting.

The V6 dCi Concept also includes a variable geometry turbocharger, which generates a high level of torque even at very low revs.

The engine's air intake ducts have been specially designed to increase combustion speed inside the cylinders by swirling the air in the cylinders-the swirl effect. Cooled EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation), which uses a Renault-patented air/water intercooler, contributes to overall environmental performance of the engine.

The architecture of the exhaust manifolds has been designed to limit load losses and ensure that the maximum amount of energy is delivered to the turbine.

The V6 dCi Concept introduces a new NOx trap. Alongside the catalytic converter, this device is located on the exhaust line between the turbocharger and the particulate filter. The engine is also fitted with a maintenance-free, periodic regeneration particulate filter, which operates using a seventh fuel injector located upstream of the filter. Regeneration occurs automatically, with no need for intervention from the user.

Well I can add this at least:

Nissan will unveil the completely redesigned 2009 Maxima next week at the 2008 New York Auto Show, but wants to whet our appetites with some teaser shots before the big reveal. Unlike most teaser shots, we can actually glean a few details from these. The shot of the headlight, for instance, shows a new shape for the Maxima's "eyes". It appears the sheetmetal from the fender overlaps the headlights in a way that has part of the turn signal jutting out on its own. It kind of looks like the 370Z rendering that appeared in a Japanese mag we showed you a few days ago. Also note the "4DSC" sticker on the rear passenger window, which harkens back to the day when Nissan referred to the Maxima as a "4-Door Sports Car". From what little the teasers tell us, history may repeat itself next week.

To be honest, I don't think power is what we need to worry about.I hope Nissan got smart and decided to mount the engine low with equal length halfshafts so that we can enjoy torque without half the world whining like little girls about how their pansy hands can't take the torque steer.

And I hope they haven't gone and ruined the VQ by cutting it's low end torque in favor of pointless peak horsepower and a needlessly high redline. I'd rather see ~280hp ~280 ft lb than 300 hp and 250 ft lb. But then, even if they do kill it, there's always the diesel option.

And it had better have a damned 6 speed and at least an OPTION for a real automatic. CVTs belong in Priuses and Versas. Not 4DSCs.

It's been neutered right now with 255hp and CVT only. From a torque steer perspective I relatively have none anyway so it's not a problem (tho a factory fix would be nice). Realize with a FWD sedan the higher the TQ the more spin off the line so I really don't see why a 300hp/250tq would be any worse than a 280/280. IMO, the 300/250 may get a tick better 1/4-mile time due to a better launch.

After closer inspection of the pictures, a few observations:

The headlights are tucked UNDER the beltline/lip/sill around the nose. They don't wrap back and taper off like on the 6th gen. I really like what I can see thus far. It's got a bit of a scowl to it.Hard to tell exactly how it'll look when not viewed from above, though.

No more rear window buttresses. The C-pillars appear to run very flush with the backlight glass.

Our 6th-gen style doors are back. WIDE opening at the top but a significant wheel arch cutout at the bottom.

The trunk seam is odd...as with the headlights, it's hard to tell exactly what we're looking at.

2009 Nissan Maxima Revealed

Gah! I don't know what to say about this, the new Maxima pics just came out and everything BUT the nose is awesome, those headlights hurt my eyes.

I have to say I'm pretty disappointed.

It's got the same case of Lexus-wannabe bluginess that ruined the new G. It even has the G's horrible hood...uh...creases. WHY on earth did they choose to make it look like a giant G? Doesn't that completely defy their new "total separation of Nissan and Infiniti" that is the reason we don't get a RWD Max?

The tail lights look like they fell off the Toyota assembly line (look at Camry, Yaris).

I like the new grille, nose, and I actually really like the headlights (not so much the little...nubbin on the bottom, but the change from the vertical cliché...a little scowl never hurts a car in my eyes, either).

The rear looks good except for whatever the crap is going on with those C-pillars...

BUT, on the plus side: no rubber door moulding! And look what a difference it makes! So much more classy!

Other than the headlights and the wallowing hood line, I kind of like it. A few nice hard body lines, and a reasonably athletic looking stance. I can't wait to see it in person saturday to have a real perspective on how it looks.
