Very nice. yeah it was never really my cup of tea but my christian school teacher got me into hardcore. i was always the "metalhead" kid HAHA and always hated punk (still do) and hardcore. but i was ignorant and still am about somethings.

Ok...I watched that first vid, and all I saw was a guy hitting everything at a dicearnly fast pace. I couldn't even tell what the hell the rythm was, if there even was one.

I am not denying the guy is lightning fast, but I really can't see anything fantastic in that.

Now, if any of you knew who Randy Castillo was, you might like this video. This was from the Ulitmate Ozzy dvd during the Ultimate Sin tour (For which Metallica was an opening act touring for the Master of Puppets CD.)

Math rock is a rhythmically complex, guitar-based style of experimental rock music...... It is characterized by complex, atypical rhythmic structures (including irregular stopping and starting), angular melodies, and dissonant chords.
While I personally cannot stand Math Rock, I do understand that there is a purpose to it and there is a purpose behind the weird choppy structure of the music.

pure metal drumming isnt that complex just lots of rolls and paradidles lol funny word. metal hybrids are a bit more, but i personally think all post-hardcore and the new screamo and experimental drummers are alot better more complex beats and have really solid timing when need.

check this pretty coolhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZqwvjwqwK4heres a experimental band cover http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...latednotice the crazy bass line its all off beat and choppedand some screamo lol this kid is amazing at covershttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v...latednice symbol workalso the guitar is a lot crazier in experimental and post-hardcore since there are jazz influenceshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v...latedcrazy crazy slides i suck at guitar lol i wish i could play that

....are you seriously using silverstein as a benchmark for musical talent? Thats incredibly basic music. Nothing difficult at all.

I was going to post that earlier, but I decided against wasting 30 minutes posting a novel to someone who is into that kind of music. brizanden, I'm glad you found a style of music you love, that's great. It's not my thing but it sure is for a lot of people. Taste in music is purely based on opinion. There is no real superior form of music, just opinions. It's dynamic. However, skill and complexity are static. It is fact whether something is technical or complex. Those videos, quite simply, are not.

I dont mean to come off as a music snob or anything, I just cant stand when people source emo bands as incredible musicians with complicated and challenging guitar and drum work. Maybe compared to other emo/alt rock bands, it is. But you really need to listen to other genres if you want to hear stuff that is technical, complicated, and hard to play. Emo will not offer any of that.

So metal drumming isn't complex? You're telling me that the videos you posted are more complex than this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqayQGHHMhgOr this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqCDBAo0oQQOr this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=jPVwK_k_9hUOr this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=jBnK7fC4yj0

Now I'm not a drummer, but I know a lot, and they all tell me that **** is pretty complex.

I am a guitarist, and I can tell you with certainty that the last video you posted is very easy for me to do, as it should be for anyone who has been playing for a few years. There is absolutely nothing challenging about playing the song in that video. I kept waiting for the crazy slides to come, but as the video neared the end I realized the slides I were watching were the ones in question. I could easily play it that good this time tomorrow. You will probably ask me to prove it, but I wont. I'm not going to waste my time playing sophomoric garbage when I could practice the sweeps, shreds, and slides that will actually help me become a better guitarist. Not to mention that it would take every ounce of patience in me to continue to practice and play music so uninteresting as in the video you posted. If you practice guitar for six months I'm SURE you could play those slides.

I won't even bother posting the myriad of guitar videos that are more challenging than the one you posted. I would be here all night. You got off pretty easy because of it.

^ ok thats cool what u said i can agree and i never said that emo is incredible i said post-hardcore is def more complex then a large number of what the bands out there are playing. And i said im sure the guitar thing wasnt hard i was just saying i can't do it and it was kinda cool. i screw with a guitar, but just started, but i have been playing drums for about seven years now well six minus the one year i wanted nothing to do with them. Like you said it deepends largly on the band not type of music. SO yeah i was prolly wrong when i said all metal music is simple hell i like some of it. And i dont only like emo i am into almost every kind of music except pop rock and country. my dad has had me into music from a very early age and is quite the respected bass guitarist in columbus. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...latedthere is something not emo and def deserves some respect the tempo changes are wicked and if u think not go out and try it.

oh and that mike potan one was def good, but the second one is the same base roll yes he kinda breaks it down, but not to complex its the magic of a double bass pedal. also i would like to note from a drummers perspective that just becuase a drummer does not play complex solos doesn't mean hes not good. for example John Bonham super solid will always go down as one of the greatest drummers of all time cuase he had amazing time.

Again, I just dont see it man. He employs techniques that every drummer would know at speeds that are not difficult. The tempo changes are nothing special...I listen to bands that switch tempo and go off beat in the middle of riffs and then switch back or change again. It's always changing and very unpredictable so it's also hard to learn. The drumming in that video is very predictable and I cant imagine it's that hard to do.

Marco is a VERY accomplished drummer who is well known in the drumming world. Even my buddies who are drumline drummers and have never played rock/metal drums know all about Marco. He has played with many different people and bands, like with Paul Gilbert from Racer X in that video. He currently plays for the uber-technical death metal band Necrophagist. I posted a thread about them in this forum with a link to one of their songs. I know you wont like it, but its worth a listen for the insane guitar work. The drumming is not half bad either. As a guitarist I have wet dreams to the song I posted in that thread.

I know what you mean. It was about 5 years ago when I started getting into melodic death metal. At first, I almost stopped listening to it altogether because of the screaming. I kept listening to the songs though, because I was so intrigued by the guitar work. It's incredible. I can't play 90% of the metal I listen to. It's very frustrating at a guitarist, but at the same time its inspiring. Eventually I listened to it more and more and now I have no problem with it.

You should listen to Protest the Hero's first CD. The music is metal and very technical, but they use clean vocals most of the time. They are very good.

Actually, I think I have that CD hosted. Email me at the address in my profile and I'll send you the link.

Some local talent...

I'm not much into the vocals, but the technicality amazes me.

I friggin' love it when people say that. Do you realize how self-superior and condescending it sounds? "I like stuff that's not popular so I'm awesome" is what I read. I don't want to expand my horizons. I want to listen to music I enjoy...isn't that the point? Certainly I'm open to new things. But I'm not going to force myself to like something just so I don't appear "narrow minded." Who cares? I listen to music for me, not everyone else.

It's like telling someone "just learn to like cauliflower." Why? It tastes like crap.

I despise that kind of drumming. I don't care how much stamina and "talent" it takes. It's not enjoyable to listen to.

100% agree. even if the op isnt trying to come off that way, it seems condescending to hear some kid talk down to me like hes experienced everything in life and is now doing me the favor of sharing it with the rest of the world. no offense and nothing personal to the op, just saying thats how it comes off
