Brake Flare Wrench - Special Size??

I'm trying to uncouple the brake hard lines from the flex lines so that I can install the new Technafit SS lines I purchased. The closest thing I can find to fit the brake line fittings is a 10MM flare wrench, but it's not working! Still a bit of slack and it's rounding off the corners of the fitting.

I tried every SAE size and they're no better. If 9MM is too small, and 10MM is too big, I wonder is there such thing as a 9.5MM flare wrench?? Do I need some sort of special brake flare wrench?? Any suggestions would be very helpful...

I used a 10 mm with no problems. Try the flare nut wrench on a 10mm-head bolt just to make sure it's not discrepant.

I used a locking pliers to just break the nut loose, then a 10mm to take it off the rest of the way. Lots of exposure to dirt, salt, etc, at that point.

Purchasing a higher quality Craftsman flare wrench seems to have helped. I still had to go the vice grips route on the one line that I tried different things on. Apparently the bolts on the Q (and my Nissan truck) brake lines are a little on the small end of the 10MM scale... but too big for 9.5MM (which is essentially an SAE 3/8" wrench). I'll keep everyone updated on this as I discover more.

Check out the difference between the "Drop Forged, Taiwan" tool vs. the "Craftsman Professional." I think the extra contact space inside the wrench opening makes all the difference! It's also possible that the wrench was flexing open more on the cheap wrench. In any case, the Craftsman wrench got the other three (non rounded) flare nuts off, while the other one didn't. Best $7.99 I've spent in a while...

Brake lines have always been a PITA to break free. Long nose vise grips with a quick "pop" always seems to loosen them.

I always wondered why people used those on the brake lines. I never have problems breaking them free, but looks like I'm an isolated case. I've also noticed that when using these flare wrenches they tend to give and spread out around the nut. I was using a Craftsman too. I busted out a standard 10mm wrench and worked like it's supposed to. Must be me. :D
