I bought new (to me) speakers! They're massive!

I couldn't think of anywhere that this really fit, so I decided to put it in general chat. If a mod can think of a better spot for it, feel free to move it.

I know that there are other vintage audio heads here on NICO besides myself, so I decided to post up my most recent acquisition for general review. I scored 2 Bozak B-300's, 1 Acoustic Research AR-4x, and a Lane record cabinet. The Bozaks sound wonderful and have excellent imaging and the record cabinet is built quite heavily. The wood just happened to be a pretty close match to the speaker cabinets. I will be moving soon, and these are going to be the centerpiece of my main system. Currently they're shoehorned into my room waiting to be used. I had to stand on top of the pool table to take the last picture of the set as it will be in my new place. I also scored a H. H. Scott 710 turntable that I'm passing off to a friend.

I got two of these.

The $2 bill is there for size reference. Each speaker is 30" tall x 20" deep x 24" wide.

Interesting reading. Original pamphlet came with one of the Bozaks.

That little guy is the orphan AR-4x that came with the Bozaks. I'll have to find a sibling for it before it'll be much use to me.

Case was made by Lane and just a bit of my vinyl that overflowed from my other storage areas. I think I'll save this cabinet for my best records.

That's the H. H. Scott turntable I picked up for a friend. Quite a piece of history. I'd love to own it, but I really don't need another TT.

This is probably how I'll have it set up at the new place. That's a Marantz 2270 and a Technics SL-3350 if anyone wanted to know.

Well, I'll put it this way, I've got less in them than they're worth. The Bozaks sell for around $200-500 for a set depending on quality. I'd say this set was worth around $200-300. I've got around $150 in the 3 speakers and cabinet all said. They showed up at one of the local thrift stores that I frequent.

I know that there are a lot bigger speakers out there, but these are approaching the upper limits for reasonable home systems. Definitely the biggest speakers I've ever owned.

OMG.... talk about timing... Just as this thread was loading, Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On started playing on my WMP shuffle.

Oh yeah, they sound REALLY good. I got a chance to audition them before I bought them. I've got a nice collection of speakers and stereos as it stands, so I went into it knowing I didn't want to give up the space unless they were really special. I played some tracks through them and I was floored. I'm having to get rid of some of my other stereos so I can keep these. Small price to pay, given the sound quality.

One of the biggest gripes I hear about Bozak speakers is a low Wife Acceptance Factor. Luckily I don't have to worry about that.

Yep... most of my stuff is. I think the newest thing I own is my computer. Before that, early 90's CD players, 80's cassette decks, and then you get into the bigger part of the collection from the 70's, some stuff from the 60's, and a bit from before that.

I haven't pulled these apart to check the date codes yet, but I'm guessing 60's vintage for the Bozaks. 70's I believe on the AR-4x, and probably 70's or early 80's on the record case.

Acoustic Research FTW! Great brand, though too bad they got bought by dynavox? I wouldn't mind having a pair of AR-1's (w/the 500w sunfire amp built in)

Nice catch. I think you'll be very pleased with the AR-4s once you find a match. (Don't know much about the Bozaks)

Please tell me that you have a Nakamichi Dragon.

I've always wanted one of these:

1000 ZXL Limited

I'm sort of casually trying to find myself an old Micro Seiki turntable right now.

Maybe something like this:

Do you have one of those cassette decks that actually physically flips the tape over to play the other side? I always thought they were kinda neat.

I had a Conion in the mid 80's. That was fun.

A white boy with a giant Conion.

Wish I never got rid of it, but it quit working so I tossed it (electrical problems).

I don't think I'll be able to properly audition this AR-4x until I can source another one. It sounded good from what I've heard so far, though.

That AR-1 description did jib well with what I had remembered seeing, but a bit of searching led me to the AR-1 High Res. From what I read about it, I think I'll pass, but if you score a set, let me know how you like them.

Well, I figure the AR was a gimmie, and I primarily bought the Bozaks. I've liked them so far and I don't see that changing. I think I'm going to look around the stereo forum I'm on and see if anyone has another orphan AR that they want shed of.

Nope. Sorry to disappoint. The only Nakamichi cassette deck I've got at the moment is one I'm repairing for my uncle. I've got several decks, one of my favorite is my TEAC V-909RX. Also waiting to fix up my Akai R2R.

[Borat] Very Nice [/Borat] I like.

Nope. They do sound neat. Cassette decks are pretty much the bastard children of my collection. I don't give them a lot of love.

Something like this? That's hilarious. I quit dealing in boomboxes several years ago when I got into home stereo.

even though it would decrease the value, I would recover the bozaks with black grill cloth/burlap. The grills look ugly

I suppose I'm lucky that I like the way they look. I've got several different styles of grille cloth depending on the speaker, and about the only ones I haven't been too hot on are the burlap covers on my Dynaco's and the cheap black covers on some of the 80's Marantz and Pioneer speakers I got rid of.

To each his own.

P.S. They do look better in person. They're a bit more of a cream color.

I'd give my left nut for a Nakamichi tape deck.

Don't change the speaker grill! The old-school look enhances the flavor. PMQ is nuts.

I wonder how your setup would sound with some new B&Ws.

Oh, the wood cabinets are awesome looking, you got your money's worth just on those. Give them a little "Pledge" love and get them ready for the next disco party....that was real music back them.

I just had a Nak tape deck come in for repairs. I didn't get around to finishing it, so I sent it back home. They're getting a lot cheaper.

I love the look of these. I bought a 3rd one that is just a shell. I think I might find drivers for it, get a 4th, stack them, use an active crossover and bi-amp them.
