I had Wes & mtcookson looking into this for me, but it's getting a bit stale so I thought I'd throw it out into the public arena where there are more people to potentially get cracking on investigating this.

Info on Z22E rods is scarce... but what I did was take the listed compression height of 30.4mm for the VQ30DET piston, and subtract that from the 220.35mm deck height, and half the stroke, which left me with 148.6mm required from a rod.

I then googled 148.6mm +conrod, and hey presto I stumbled upon the 1981-1983 Z22E rod. Further information suggests it's wider at the big end than the VH rods, has a 53mm big end diameter (55 on VH, so only 1mm radius of material to machine out to use it), and 23.5mm pin diameter that we could bush down.

Now we just need to actually measure up a rod and see how strong it looks, so we can determine whether or not it'd be a viable solution and if modifying it to fit will be possible.

Imagine that, two stock, off the shelf nissan parts, cheap as chips, combined to let us boost the VH45 like you can a VQ30DET :D

Anyone/everyone please investigate this! I pretty much can't get access to a Z series engine in my country, but I imagine they'd be relatively common in the USA, as well as new connecting rods, so please investigate and post your findings!

Z22E?

i googled it. seems like the only thing i can come up with is that it's from a 200sx... however, most usdm s12's had ca-variants. perhaps try tracking down some s12 people.

what other models are these engines found in? next time i'm in the u-pick yards, i'll try to keep an eye out for one of these engines.

I have a Z22E but haven't been able to work on... my brother's stupid Honda keeps giving me trouble over and over again.

Though, I'll finally have the final part needed this Thursday and will get it out of there then which should be me the space needed to get that engine out (unless the Honda feels like doing something else to me )

Hahah mtcookson.... I thought you mentioned you have the earlier Z22E engine with the wrong rod length? If it's a running motor, may not be worth pulling it open.

Nah, its coming out regardless as I want a VG30ET in it instead.

But yeah, I think it is the early motor... but I'm still trying to double check. Pictures for these things are hard to find. I found one person that claimed that NAPS-Z motors are the later ones but haven't had any other confirmation.

Wasn't that a truck motor? There was a guy on 240sxforums and I think he joined here recent;y. Hs name is something like Saintlycharboy. Anyway, he was going to do something interesting with parts from this motor and a KA24DE from a 240SX so I think he knows a lot about the Z2x series engines. Hit him up if he's not already reading this

The idea was to use a Z24 crank in a KA. honestly, i haven't played with the numbers in a long time, and the information was 2 computers ago.

I'll look around and see what i can come up with, but i'm no help as of yet

PS, Jamie - I've been on here since 01 or so - just the quiet type...

I believe it was used in the trucks and the 200SX mostly. Maybe a few other models but I'm not sure.

The most common variety of this motor was in the datsun 720 pickups and early hardbodies IIRC most S12s were CAs of some flavor or another
