I have a 91 Q45 and the heat is acting strangely. Since it has gotten cold out my heat doesnt seem to work. Since I have small kids I let my car run for almost 5 mins before we get in but its to no avail because when we get in we can still see our breaths. Today I ran some errands and almost 15 mins into driving the air coming out was still cold. Plese help me figure out whats wrong. Thanks.

Sorry. HVAC = Heating Vent/Air Conditioner(?) unit. basically, your heater controls.

The display was blank on my old one, so I never knew what temperature I was at. (Thank God it was summer time and not winter, otherwise I'd have frozen my nips off.)

Now. Given my limited knowledge of Q45 technology, I'm leaning towards the mix door (located behind the dash) being stuck in position and not allowing the hot air to reach the cabin.

It might be totally something different. But if my diagnosis is correct, I'll be really proud!

There was a post about it somewhere along with a write-up with pictures of how to fix the problem.

Does the coolant temp gauge rise to the midpoint 3 o'clock position?

every now and then my display doesnt show up but the other day when I was driving almost 15 mins and cold air was still blowing out everything was lit up. So how do you go about fixing this thing behind the dash or getting it unstuck?

Yep, sounds like a broken mix door. Here's a thread on the subject. Be sure to follow the links maxnix provided, too.

Broken mix door hinges are 50 x more common on plastic 94-96 than on 90-93 which use a metal rod inside the hinge post.
