Be sure to use a 10-20x microscope on the 7 [3+4] larger solder pads on the upper board.

It looked burned to me. I thought you posted the pic to make fun of the fact that the solder connections were still good but the board was overheating. What is that black stuff? Oil leaking in from the engine? Does it wipe off? Do you notice an improvement in engine performance with the new MAF?

No its does not come off with electrical cleaner its really one there. The board was complete sealed with silicone I doubt anything was leaking?

Who else has torn one apart to tell me if this is normal. I did examine the joints with a 7X magnifying glass and they appear fine.

The drivability issues have stopped, but they where intermitant so time will tell if the problem is fixed. Spark plugs, and trans pan drop / filter replacement next weekend then in for a BG flush

no that is NOT normal. i had a very small amt. of similar stuff on mine. cleaned & re-cleaned w/elec. cont. clnr., re-soldered some cons. re-siliconed & no issues appx. 2yrs. now. oh yeah, i nearly forgot. i used a SOFT tooth brush to do a little scrubbing. my thought at the time was it is worthless the way it is so wtf. nothing to lose.

on second look at your pic your top left pin solder appears to be broken. possibly from vibration and/or heat. re-examine with a jewelers loop.

Even if I resolder is it going to fix it? Something looks fried. I guess I will give that pin a shot, cant hurt.

Thanks for the input

Wow good eye, got home and examinined it and sure enough the solder joint was gone. I guess I was looking for the wrong thing, I was looking for cracked joints. I resoldered that point. I have yet to try it out. Should work good as a backup unit.

Unless something is extremely heat sensitive, I think I would just heat up or resolder all of the joints on the board, except for the surface mount stuff...

A 25-40* [*ouch if you are an expert] watt soldering iron is the largest one should use on circuit board.

I used a variable temp pencil type with a 20watt and 40 watt setting

For the fun of it I opened up the original MAF from Q1. It got intermittant above 95F.

The only evidence of a problem was that one of the solder joints from the connector to the wires coming off of the board was cracked. I think that was a result of one of my misunderstandings way back even pre-yahoo board days, when I thought the connector everyone said was bad was actually the one on the MAF (not the harness side). So I pulled on the connector after removing the screws...

So I resoldered those connections and I'll test it out at some point to see how it works. I guess it will be hard to know for sure until it gets really hot again.

Like a body shop guy told me about something on my truck... "It's already f'd up right? So if you f with it and it doesn't work, it's still just f'd up... what do you have to loose?"

Not a glamorous way to say it, but very true. Not too much work to resolder a few joints... maybe 30 minutes to see if you can save $400.

When you add up the electronic modules that owner abuse or adverse conditions and just plain time [electroytic caps] causes to fail, it becomes quite cost effective to spend some time learning basic electronics and repair proceedures.

Or stock up on spares at your local junkyard.

MAF, FPCU, Rear light bulb sensor, HVAC, PS contol unit, Bose Amps, HVAC fan controller, Body control modules.

Add to the above TCU and ECU for diagnostic speed up [we'll it ain't the ecu/tcu cause I swapped them]

You should just start taking fried Q MAFs and repairing them.... I have an intermittent MAF at home, I may take it apart and try and fix it.

if you do not posses the necessary skills they are easily gained. radio shack is most helpfull. tell them what you want to do. buy a book on simplr elec. circuit testing & repair.(or go to public library) pick up off the curb a defunct radio, tv,or pc tower and hone your skills on these free circuit boards. soldering pencil, $15., fine electrical solder, $15. for a large spool, a stand alone mag glass is handy. a couple of other acces. & your in bidness. oh yeah, VERY IMPORTANT-learn how to identify capacitors. i have no real working knowledge of elec circuitry but learned by trial & error. one bit of advice i never read in any book. work on a material that does NOT build or hold a static chrg. i use a piece of old cotton flanel. bueno suerte
