Did you find an answer to this?

I have a 96 that acts the same way and what I found was to hold the key turned at it's very most back point.....all the way down and hold it there for a second or 2....it then cranks.

I took it to the Infiniti dealership here in Baton Rogue.....they changed the starter which was not the problem all along. Someone said a solanoid maybe or a sensor that is not letting the car know it is in Park. Nothing makes sense.

Here is a thread that discusses a similar problem. I'll try to locate some helpful instructions when I get home from work.zerothread?id=240032

The ignition switch is in the steering column. Information on the wiring can be found in this section of the FSM, page EL-25.http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/maxima/1996/EL.pdf

Directions on disassembly of the steering column are on page ST-8 of this section. http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/maxima/1996/ST.pdf

Do I have to take the steering wheel out for replacing a ignition switch? If it is needed, it isn't easy.

You should just have to remove the plastic covers around the column (behind the steering wheel) to gain access to the ignition switch.

Hi.I found the new clue related to the hard starting problem. I thought it was hard to start when the engine is hot. However the engine isn't hot but it has the same symptom when the car was parked in which directly exposed to the sun. My parking lot is under tree in my house, but the school parking lot has not any celling upon the car like the street parking. Today's temp is 85F~90F. When I came back to home from school, it happen again. What kinds of parts are related to the outside temp? Thanks.
