I am looking for a helpful push in the right direction. I tore down my 90 Q to do the timing chain guides. I have completed that portion, and have the colored links on the chains inline with the marks on the cam gears. The lower cover and two upper covers are in place. I am getting ready to put the valve covers back on along with the 3 sensors that go in front of the cam gears. My question is this: what things do I need to make sure to do while finishing up this job? Do the sensors need to be lined up with any marks? Are there any pitfalls you can point out that I would miss without a shop manual while finishing this job? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

Doing this without a shop manual ............how are you setting all the reassembly torque values?

Yeah, a manual is a really good thing to have. The sensors should line up OK assuming the #1 piston is at TDC, and I think it must be if all the links are lined up correctly with the pins. Be certain the CAS flanges are centered properly in the cam sprocket before torquing the sensor down. Also, the CAS mark needs to be pointing left, or the spark timing and the valve timing will be off 180 degrees. Turn the crankshaft slowly by hand before putting the valve covers on. If anything binds, now is the time to find out (hopefully without damaging anything). The crankshaft bolt needs to be torqued up to 270 ft-lbs or thereabouts. The others I can't recall.

I do have a copy of the section of the manual for replacing the cam guides with the torque values. It is not very clear to me from the manual where TDC for #1 cyl. is, and which way of the two possible positions the CAS should be placed. Also, are there any other pitfalls besides the timing, that I should make sure to check or do during reassembly?

There should be a pic in that section showing the alignment for both. I can't think of anything particularly challenging aside from the timing, and aside from the normal challenge of getting everything back together just right. Maybe put a bit of dielectric grease on all connector contacts before hooking them up.

Be sure and undo the little hook on the passenger side chain tensioner.

Here's a link to the 94 FSM which is the oldest available online. For the timing chain guides/tensioners it should be the same as for the 91Q.
