Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday.

If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

A friend told me about this I tried it because I didn't believe him, and it works!

I've also tried it and it does work. But everybody I tried it with had the same carrier (Sprint). Get ready for the folks to come in and swear up and down that this doesn't work...

I heard of this, tried it over Cingular, Verizon, and Sprint. Did'nt work. Two different cars too, stock Nissan frontier and my aftermarket one. Didn't work. Guess it's limited to only certain phone/service/car combinations.

So keyless entries work off of a certain frequency? I'd imagine the call would have to have crystal clear reception for this to work then.

One reason I can see this as not working is because wireless remotes transmit using radio frequencies. As far as I know, Cell phones can not transfer radio frequency's over the voice line. I know that cell phone's themselves use radio frequency's but having the remote frequency piggyback over the system just doesn't seem right. Im not saying it won't work, but it just doesn't seem plausible.

Every time this comes up on a forum, I call mom and have her try it. We're 62 miles away, and it's never worked. Just tried it again. Fail.

That being said, it might work at much, much, much shorter ranges, extended antenna and such.

Top Gear says that your head can double the range, though. That works.

I tried it in disbelief,we were about 30 miles apart and it worked! Seriously. Maybe there are a few more factors that play into it that we don't know of. We both have Cingular phones and it worked, I haven't tried any other combination with carriers or phones.

I knew they did this on some tv show, forget if it was mythbusters or top gear. I learned about the whole "putting the remote to the head for longer range" thing when I worked as a porter at a Dodge dealership. Sure did come in handy for finding those Viper's lost in the lot

My keyless entry system dates back to 1991. It uses a cup and string to transmit the signal.

I think everyone has. When the son went away to school I put an extra key under his car where only he knew where it was for a last resort. Did the same to the wifes car. Its paid off for each. Everyone should. I dont want a wireless remote as the only way to enter.......to risky for no reason

Your voice is a frequency.

Just depends what frequency range the voice channel will pass.

i locked my keys in the car with it running once..

My wife and I tried the cell phone keyless thing.. didn't work for us.

I can vouch for the your cranium helping extend the range.. Just put the keyless under your chin and open your mouth.. strange.. but works great! I'd say it adds a good 1/2 the range..

My mom was at home and had to move my car with the spare key, she closed my door with it running....LOCK!

I get a slip at school saying there is an emergancy at home and I need to call right away, so I start freaking out and run to the office. Get my mom on the phone and she tells me, I thought something VERY bad happened. She came to my school and got my set of keys.

I didn't drive to school that day due to me running late, and being late means no parking spot. Oh well.

txgcoupe, yes your voice HAS a frequency. So does light. But it cant be sent through a cell phone (yes, pics can. but not thru a microphone, then out a speaker).

OK guys, I've tried this with Verizon and Cingular phones and it works fine! Im thinking that there may be a difference in the frequencies that the cell phone operates on that has a huge role in this.
