For those of you who have crotch rockets... how much do you pay in insurance? I'm looking at getting one for the summer through my own insurance, not on the parents. I'm 19 with 6 points for minor violations (stop sign, 11mph over a 35 limit)

Bike will be worth no more than 1500 or so.

OUCH! I registered and insured my first bike in my Moms name and we agreed that If I ever wrecked that I would tell the cops & insurance company I was taking her bike for a spin.

I had a 1999 CBR 600 F4 in my name last year, and liability only was $130 a year.

Theres not much point in taking collision out on an older or inexpensive bike, because even if you just lay it down and turn it in, they're likely to total it. With the money you spend on collision for a year, you could afford to fix the bike out-of-pocket.

I also have no violations whatsoever.

it's usually pretty cheap, ^ sounds pretty reasonable. The unfortunate truth is that you're not likely to cause nearly as much significant damage on a bike. But having a record will affect it relatively strongly I imagine.

dude i've insured 19yrs olds that get either r6 or r1's and they finance the bikes so they end up paying like 200.00 a month. thats with at least one speeding ticket. but like cmfireman said its alot better to just get liability on an old bike. thers also a cycle safety course you can take and that gets you a discount on your insurance.

From this thread you are going to get a ton of mixed results. Insurance costs depends on many factors such as location, type of bike, engine size, previous tickets, insurance carrier, age, gender, etc.

But, I am 22 yrs old and have AAA with nothing on my record and a 2001 YZF 600R with full coverage and it costs me $380 a year. If you get a bike, I HIGHLY suggest full coverage because bikes get nabbed all the time.

Everything gets nabbed all the time in SoCal

But I agree with TachyonS14, your best bet is to call your insurance company and get a quote because of all the factors.

Take the MSF course too, there's some useful info. that isn't necissarily common sense.

I'm lookin at a 96 Suzuki GS500, a price quote on progressive.com netted me 380/yr for bodily damage / medical up to like 15k per person.

By full coverage are you referring to full coverage for any harm to the bike and the highest amount of medical expenses for anyone involved in an accident?

I've never owned one, but Scorpion helmets has went from being virtually unknown to being a VERY popular manufacturer in the last 2 or so years.

I was planning on purchasing the EXO700 before I sold my bike because of all the positive reviews I had read, and they are DOT and SNELL certified (something many cheaper brands can't say).

I'm 18 had my license when I was 16, got my bike before I got my car, bike insurance around $80/mo on liability w/ non-insurance motorist coverage. Little too high which is currently why I don't have insurance right now I got a clean record and everything.

As for helmet I have Shoei RF-1000, awesome helmet, expensive though. As for gear I've always been reppin Alpinestars, I like their quality even tho u can find something cheaper. I prefer quality that's going to save my life.

For helmet get an HJC one...

one of my friends got in a hit and run not too long ago on his bike, he has full coverage and it's a good company; but they wont cover it cause it was a hit and run.

Just something to keep in consideration for the over priced insurance

That doesn't make much sense, the quotes I was getting were in the 500/year range with my record and everything. What insurance do you have?

Progressive. Don't forget it really depends on what type of bike you have...

I just turned 20, bought my R1 and insured it by itself through progressive because that was the only company I could get insurance through on that bike (1000cc's) even with a clean record. I paid, are you ready, 3200/yr for full coverage. Adding medical would have brought it up over 8k/yr.

My 600rr through State Farm was only 400/yr but I had to have a 2nd vehicle on the policy or else they wouldn't insure a bike.

I have an EXO 700 in flat black and love it! Way way way better than my previous HJC POS helmet.

I heard that in Washington State, you DO NOT have to have bike insurance if you don't want to,as long as your bike is pay-off.?....is this true?

I pay $260 every 6 month, liability on a 02 R6, 23 years old, other 6 months I put the bike on storage insurance. I have too many tickets, I lost count.

I just recently sold the bike to a friend, hes 18, no accidents, 1 ticket and they are charging him $2300 only for liability for the year though his parents plan.

it'll probably be a boring time for you, but it'll be worth it. The MSF class I took a couple years ago seemed like it was tailored for people who had never gotten on a motorcycle before (and at least half the class had no experience, there were a couple teenagers who signed up just to get to ride motorcycles, lol.) The first day there was like an hour of clutch control exercises.

There is some good info there, a lot of it is common sense, but getting a chance to practice evasion maneuvers and such is never a bad thing. In mine though, I got especially bored on the 2nd day and was almost knee dragging the little Suzuki 150 in the cornering exercise.
