It might be interesting to note that it has been observed by T3 that the Bosch Platinum plugs decomposed in Q45 cylinders leaving electrode pieces in the cylinder! The standard NGK Platinums are the only plug to use in this engine (4.5L).

Are the Iridiums the correct heat range? Exotic metals do not correlate necessarily to a better performing plug.

maxnix is right. I spoke at length with an engineer from NGK here in the Valley, back when I was considering the NGK iridiums vs the platinums. He explained to me that the iridiums are NOT designed for an environment such as the Q's combustion chamnber and unequivocally cautioned against using the iridium plugs in anything but the low compression 4-cyl for which they were degned.

NGK but not the Iridium ones but the factory NGK 's for the Q.

The Bosch Plat +4 dont have a good track record, at least not in a VH45DE.

Based on this info, I think I'll vote for the NGK's!

I already explained this in the 240 chat, so I copied and pasted it: You want an explanation well here ya go. Energy tends to travel down the least resistent path, right? Well think about it. Even with a custom ignition system you're going to have a very hard time getting all four electrodes on the 4+ plugs to arc. So you end up with a sort of misfire and the plugs foul up faster. I have NGKs in my other car and they rock. Iridium has a much higher melting point than platinum too. This is for Bosch :slap

I wouldnt compare the two, since they are different elements. I would not recommend/or get Bosch plugs. I would not get NGK Iridiums either honestly.

If your driving KA's get the NGK-R plugs, and save yourself a lot of money, and use whats made to be used with our cars.

If you really want an iridium plug there are some better options out there..

therefor, i will not be voting in the poll:p

Stock NGKs for my Q.

Original set lasted over 100k miles. Why risk otherwise?

Ok, I didn't even know that spark plugs could be so expensive--but granted that they are on nopi.com---HKS super racing pro

Multi electrode plugs are a bad idea in the first place.

I have bosch +4s and they are working fine. Can't comment on any power gains because I installed them at the same time as a K&N filter. I've probably got 20k on them by now. All of this talk about them decomposing and whatnot makes me want to get out my spark plug socket and go check them.

I'll bet you that those things foul up faster than single electrode platinums. Btw I said foul up, not decompose. Big difference.

This is all purely based on personal opinion and thought into the subject... with a couple facts thrown in there.

Fact: Electricity takes the path of least resistance. Unless you are buying some extreme custom, individually labratory tested, super plugs (that cost $100+ a plug), the prongs are going to have some sort of dis-similarity. Therefore, electricity will go down the one that is the least resistant, every time, all the time.

The prongs don't act as back ups. They all expand at the same rate from explosion in the combustion chamber. They all get deposits, the unused ones probably more so.

And those extra prongs? They're slowing down the explosion. Think of a house. A fire starts on one end of the house. To get to the other side quickly, it has to go around walls (until it burns them down of course, but that's not the point here). Now if you take down those walls, and just have a fire going from one end to the other, unobstructed. It's going to be able to burn much more quickly.

Now that we're talking about obstructions, I've been thinking.. With the top of the spark being blocked off by the prong, it is an obstruction too (in engines where the spark plug goes into the center of the combustion chamber).

- If you had the spark travel sideways, then would that provide a less obstructed path?-Someone else already thought of this with e3 spark plugs you see in parts stores, that have a V shaped prong.

BOSCH SUCKS when you buy the +4 or +2 plugs and every one of the prongs is a different gap then why would you buy them

That's interesting because I had a tech from NGK AND a former NGK engineer recommend the iridium's for my motor. I've been running them for about 20K miles on gasoline and then another 15K miles on e85 and they are still in great condition.
