Ok, she knows I am big into DIY speaker building. I've been researching/reading, shopping and planning for a while now, but have been unable to initiate any building due to a lack of a hand router. (I already have everything for my next two projects) Well last night we went out to Home Depot to pick up some supplies for her house. While there, I looked for a router and with her guidance, picked out one which would work very well. (by guidance I mean I was going to get a cheap Ryobi for 53.00, but she insisted I get quality and had me get this variable speed Porter Cable for 189.00)

So we get everything we need, head to the checkout and she drops down a few hundreds from her purse. She explained she was buying it for me for christmas! Deep down inside I'm thinking she's getting tired of her speakers and is really wanting me to get hers done, but who cares, I have a new 2.25hp variable speed router!

Sweet, you're a lucky guy. My wife just bought me a new desk, audio system for the computer and a gig of RAM. Said "merry early Christmas!" Was cool by me. I guess we're all lucky like that!

Cool dude. What speakers are you building? I've done a few sets in the past, I'm more into listening now because what I have sounds good enough for me.

First I am building my sisters sub for her house. It will be done up in either Rosewood or Cherry. It's a 12" JBL sub I bought years ago and never used it. I picked up a 300w amp (totally overkill) from Partsexpress on sale and will have it done by christmas.

The second one will be built after christmas once I help finish remodeling my GF's house. It's an 18" Elemental Designs 19Ov.2, Behringer 2400w amp (again toally overkill) with a DEQ2496 as the preamp/EQ/X-over. This will be in a huge Sonotube covered in black carpet with pine wood ends (I hope). The reason for the huge amp is because it was only 25.00 more than the 1400w, it's more efficient and I have ample power for TWO 18" subs...just incase

Cool. Does eD make home drivers now or are you just using one of their car subs? My friend in FL has gone through a toooon of eD subs, they seem like a good value but some of the older models were fragile. I've got a shiva with a PE 250 watt plate amp in a small 15" square box, gets the job done. I built a set of 2 way monitors in sealed enclosures using Usher silk dome tweeters and Peerless 6.5" mids. I really like them, perfect sound for me, so I've stuck with them for a couple years now. I'm just running it all off a Panasonic digi receiver with digi input from a Panasonic DVD player. Sounds great, costs not much Technology has really helped audio a lot lately, not the Bose BS stuff but the actual revolutionary things like digital crossovers and fully digital amps. Have fun with that giant sub! Someday I want to build some gargantuan speakers with a huge dipole sub and have a kickass home theater/listening room.

My GF refuses to buy me any car-related stuff...

Oh and when I first did my swap, she bet that the engine will break down in a month. She lost and owes me a Craftsman ratcheting wrench set... well I still dont have it.

Other than that shes a great gal tho. haha

mother of god! what do you need to route anyway?

I like the Porter Cable though...their base designs are usually super easy and fast to adjust for depth, and they're built pretty damn sturdy.

for a trim router though, I gotta go with the new Bosch Pony 1hp. it's the tits.

edit: Oh...ok...you're making boxes....yeah, routers work great for making a nice hole if you have patterns and a bearing bit.

My sisters should look similar to this but with rounded edges painted black. Notice how the port sticks out a bit from the box.

Either a cherry or rosewood vaneer with a medium-dark cherry stain. I'd really like to do ash or maple with a very light stain (nice tan and black contrast) but my sister likes cherry, so that's what I'm going with. It should be similar to what's pictured. (Though I'm using a black 12" JBL and not an aluminum Stryke audio 15")
