Alright guys, because my arm broke today, I've decided to pull off my convertible top, and try to remove the arms, and get it professionally welded, how hard is it to pull the top off, and replace it??

Also, can anyone supply me with the FSM to remove the top and the arms

keep an eye on ebay to get a service manual for the vert. i would HIGHLY recommend you get it before even thinking about undoing one screw on the top.

I just recently did a top on a friend's car, and it's not a fun chore. It's not exactly hard, but just long and tiresome. There are so many little screws and brackets to keep track of, and they need to be pulled off in a particular order.

Removing the entire top (i.e. all in one piece: fabric, frame, window, etc) is very easy. Removing just the top fabric and putting everything back together is tedious...

Removing entire top:0) Release the pump pressure thing (the mode you set when manually opening/closing the top) and unlatch the front part of the top. Move the top back and forth as necessary during these steps to get to parts.1) Remove rear seats2) Remove rear quarter panels3) Remove the little bag/booty/dust thing that the top rests on when it is fully retracted - there are a bunch of little hand screwed in washers near the edge of the rear of the window.4) Remove the 12 or so 10mm nuts holding the rear of the top to the frame.5) Remove the 2 14 or 17mm bolts on each side holding the metal frame in front of the motors behind each rear quarter panel area.6) Remove the t-40 torx bits holding the motors for the top & the cotter pin holding the motor arm to the top (makes it easier to remove this so you can remove the top separate of the hydraulic system).7) Yank/pull out the rear top area that you removed the 10mm nuts from.8) Pull entire frame out (w/ the help of a couple friends

From there you can either replace the entire frame (like I did), or start taking apart the arms/headliner/etc - VERY VERY PITA if you ask me to do it that way.

Never knew other ppl were looking for those, I wouldn't have thrown my extra frame away...

hey thanks sounds straight forward.....but I was hoping to fix the frame, lie rebuild it.

But yeah if I had parts I guess I wouldn't have to go that route. Thanks a lot though broke

Has someone even created a write up on how to replace the whole top or just the cloth?

No! I've been waiting and hoping that someone will replace their top and do a great write-up with pictures and step-bye-step instructions.

When someone does that.. Not only will they have the gratitude of the forums, but I will link the article to the FAQ's sticky, have it saved as an official NICO article.. and grant a custom title of the persons choice as reward.

that would be awesome, or even if someone could scan the fsm on that part, once I get the top, I'll do it, and make a write up of it, or someone else could do it, and I could follow that great write up.

Also has anyone ever thought of making the vert into an actual roadster?? Like take the top completely out, and make one out of fiber glass or something, so we could take off and on?

I think Greg mentioned something about removing the whole top altogether. He would then put on the boot to cover it up. I think he'll always keep the top down on his vert.

I never thought of that. I just thought about a custom made hardtop for when it rains or when it gets cold. ( yes in wintertime florida can get cold)

But for now i'm sticking with my ragtop because it still works fine.

Well, my instructions above show you how to completely take out the top. Then it's just remove the hydraulic pump (a couple screws & velcro).

Covering it up can be done w/ the boot. Actual fiberglass roadster cover - have yet to see one.

I'm removing my top completely. Everything is coming out. I'm doing a vg30dett swap. Once swap is finsihed building a cage to go in it. Once it's finished going to go get some fabric and play. Going to be like a jeep with Zippers. I'd only take the car out on Sunny days anyway but Florida likes to rain and also if I'm going to a car meet and stay somewhere need to cover it.Project begins in about 3 weeks. Order my swap kit next week, then order engine

Hmm well I was thinking if we could build a frame like the top's frame, instead of putting fabric on it, we could just weld on some metal plates, like thin 1/8 steel, across it. Then you would have a hard top then, it's just cutting and welding, the hardest part would be making the actual frame, and finding a way for it to stay on.

Oh yeah, and cutting out a piece of the metal in the back, and put a piece of glass for a window. However, keep in mind that if you rolled it, I doubt you'd still be alive

Oh!!! I'm not a fan of maroon vert or tan top, but this car looks so sweet. Tan top looks like it's meant to be there. Clean vert.

On this note, I'm replacing just the cloth on my top here next week. And my question is, how difficult is just removing the cloth, could I do it alone? Or will I need to go to a trim shop to get the cloths swapped out?

When I was searched price for the vert top, some place listed approximate hours required to replace the top and it was "8 HOURS." I'm not sure if that's realistic or not, but it seems like a tough job for newbie. What I'm thinking is you can try as much as you can and take it to the professional if you can't make it. If you do that, you don't have to pay for time they remove interiors, top and stuff.
