zerothread?id=1890393rd picture shows all 4 wheels with tires. The two in front are the rear tires. They were worn and have been removed. So, I need to get replacements.

I don't know the size of the front yet... clearly they are smaller than the rears...

Are 265's too wide for 18x8 wheels?

I wouldn't mind having a little wider rear tires... I was thinking 225/235 or 235/245 would be a nice stagger... but 265s???

What do you think would be the best tire size?

Thanks!

I have 275/40/17 on my S13 rears... Check and see what the difference in OD and width will be, but I'm thinking you *might* be pushing it.

I'd go 235/40 and 255/40.

265 is too wide for 8" width wheels.

go with 235s.

C'mon, Dean - Let him have a *little* sidewall!

Split the difference with me - 245 and I'll stfu.

Tire width has nothing to do with sidewall height.

*sigh* I know, Dean.

However, in this instance, assuming the aspect ratio remains constant, it would.

Back on topic, Dean's right. 265 *is* way too much tire, regardless of aspect ratio.

245s would be fine, but personally I wouldn't go larger than a 235 for good handling.

I have 235s on 17x9s and it's perfect. Mild stretch for great turn in, but still enough give for tons of grip.

do you get a bit more contact patch with 245's to help with launches? Not that I plan on drag racing the 'vert.. but just curious.

So 235's in front and 245's in the rear would be about right huh>

Sounds like a plan!!

Thanks guys!!!

Might as just go 245s all around in that case. Staggering tire sizes on non staggered wheels is kinda weird.

Well the wheels arrived today. I've very happy with them. They feel surprisingly light compared to the 17's I have on my car at the moment.

The two tires that are on the car are 235-40's. So, I'll probably pick up two ebay specials in the same size and run them til all 4 need to be replaced (which at the pace I'm putting on miles will be like 5 years!).

Thanks again for the advice!

bump for a new issue...

Well, my front wheels don't fit. They are ever so close, but the lip of the wheel touches the strut and rubs. If I tighten the lug down all the way, the wheel won't move.

I didn't get to the back yet..

So I need spacers I guess.. I'm thinking 5mm or 10mm should be enough.

Here's my question.. If I need spacers for my stock suspension and brakes... am I even going to be able to upgrade to coilovers and Z brakes?

It seemed like there was plenty of room between the calipers and the wheels, so I'm less concerned about the brakes..

Do coilovers stick out further than stock suspension, or less?

Sorry... I'm a complete wheel/tire/suspension newb..

Thanks for the help!!!

coilovers will decrease clearance, so yes youd need to have more spacer

but i am *amazed* that they dont clear...you dont even have tires on them yet?

theres people with x8 +35 with coilovers that fit, this should have a lot more than that....sounds to me like somethings not quite right

I've got the wheels and I have tires on all 4 now.

They are 235/40 18's

The tires actually don't rub.. I can take a wash cloth and drag it over the side of the tire.. the tire clears the strut and the mount on the side and top.. .so the tires are ok..

It's the lip of the wheel that is rubbing against the strut.

EDIT..

I am laughing so hard at myself right now...

So nismo.. your saying that 18x8 +31 should fit just fine and I totally trust you cause you def. know what your talking about.. whereas I am a retard... So I grab my digicam and saunter into the garage to take a couple pictures...

Here's three of them on one side of the car...

Here's the one on the other side that I tried to mount and just couldn't get to fit right...

Keep in mind I've never compared the wheels... two were shipped with tires and two without.

I got the 2 needed tires last week before heading to NOPI.. just got them mounted today.. Pulled them out of the trunk this afternoon and started working on them.. with a few interruptions from my baby boy of course.

As I'm rolling this thing around getting ready to mount it.. I keep thinking.. boy this tire sure does seem stretched a lot. But Dean said 235 was perfect for a 8" wide wheel, so I'm like.. "well, maybe stretching the tire like this is good for performance?".. I'm a noob, but I'm learning..

So back to my wheels... I decided that I would take a look at the original 2 wheels and tires just to see if they are stretched as much as these are..

HMMMM>>> They are quite different..

So I stand one up next to the other...

Hey, how 'bout that...

I get my tape measure... the thin one measures 9" from lip to lip (which means it's a 8" wide wheel right?..) The think one measures 10" from lip to lip (which I take to mean it's a 9" wheel).

SO

Instead of getting a great deal on 4 18x8 wheels.. I got a great deal on 2 18x8's and 2 18x9's.

Now I have to find new tires for the rear wheels... and I have an extra set of fronts for the garage..

So... back to the original post... What tire size?? I guess I have two 18x9 wheels.. 265's? 275's?

255 for the rears if youve already got 235 for the fronts

so those were 18x9 +??, im betting well above 20, which is why they rubbed

i knew there was something wrong, i just couldnt figure out what the problem could be...i guess i was trying to make it too complicated since i couldnt measure them like that myself

yeah.. not sure what the offset is on them..

the 18x8's are supposed to be +31 offset.

The rears look identical from the front (amount of lip I mean). So I don't know what the offset is. Using the offset calculator in the stickies... I came up with a guess at +43 offset for the rears.

They should fit on the rears ok shouldn't they? I always thought rear wheels had more room than the fronts.

you know, i'm asked this question all the time since i sell rims and tires(also install too), but the perfect tire for that wheel would be either 235/45/18, or 245/40/18.

you mean on the 18x8. I wound up with 235/40/18.

But I will take your advice when it's time to get some new ones.

What do you think about the right tire size for a 18x9? 265/40?

Well.. Since my wife is working and I can only work when my kid is napping.. I haven't made quite as much progress as I'd like.

But. 2 wheels installed. 3 sets of brake pads replaced. 3 calipers painted.

Almost done!

Here's some pics..

Old wheels.. pretty cool.. especially on a black car.

New wheels.. yeah.. I like them a lot!

Old

New

With caliper painted

They fit nice. Maybe not perfectly flush.. but pretty close.

My ONLY complaint is that I wish the 18x9's had a little deeper lip on them. I really like the dish on the rear wheels.. but oh well..

nice wheels dude, but yeah 265/40 would do the trick, you may need like 10mm spacers on the rear though, but i like the 4x4.5 luggs man!!
