Early Q's have R12 compressors, but since then, they make R134 replacement compressors for the Early Q's that are slightly different and require you to get new dryer and flush/vaccuum your old system out and get new fittings for the Low and High end pressure valves.
Replacing the Compressor takes time and I would rate it a 6 1/2 on a scale of 1 - 10. Some bolts are hard to get to, but it is right at the very bottom of the car so you can get to it easy enough from underneath. The Connectors are not that bad to release, but like I said, some bolts are a pain. If you do replace it make sure you get the right compressor and buy a new dryer as well. Two new rubber O rings should be purchased and watch out because if you have the old R12 system, Joe sends you the wrong ones. Tell them you have the old R12 compressor. The O-rings to those are thick and kinda cone shaped not simple O-rings.
Determine if R12 or R134a. Get the right compressor and buy a dryer as well. Well worth doing it your self if you can vacuum your system.
Good info from Redman...
Just wanted to add that there are 4 bolts holding the compressor to chassis. Can't quite remember if they are 14 or 17mm but I think 17. Two underneath facing you as you lay under the car and two up above (one in front and the other behind the compressor.) Those two are the hardest bolts to catch. There are also two lines to release (for which you need the afore mentioned O-rings) and those I believe are 12mm. Lastly there is a a plug to disconnect/reconnect.
If my numbers are wrong, it's only cause I'm going senile...
I'll be replacing mine this week so if you are patient, I'll throw up some pics.
