I have been disappointed with the a/c performance of my q for quite some time now.Took q in for evac/recharge and refilled to exactly correct amount of r134a{I watched} still cant get vent temp. below 58 degrees at highway speeds with fan on full speed, temp set to 65,and recirc. on at outside temp of 92 or higher. What next? condenser fan kicks on if car idles for longer than 5-6 minutes, otherwise it remains off-is this normal for the 96?also,when first starting car in hot sun,it takes a good 5 minutes before air feels cool/cold from vents, whereas our miata will blow 43 degree air from startup!

ps- space between rad and condenser is free of trash, fins look clear and streight compressor/dryer,condenser/evap. are original components with 179,000 miles on q-help!

I would personally invest in a manifold gauge set... And you can tell whats going on from there.....

EDIT: once you have the gauges you can do the pressure vs ambient temp and see whats going on... You can then tweak your charge a little from there..

would hate to replace parts without knowing they need it first.

Over the past two months chasing a not quit right AC problem, after tearing the system apart 2 times and flushing and evacing, dryer replacements, recharging/reoiling at least a dozen times........................the gauges finally started to make sense when they abruptly flipped readings and started quivering.

A Bad compressor that partially and ocassionally lost the ability to compress.

Wouldn't show up in the shop only on the road in heat.

My point is everyone of us thought it was a irractic expansion valve not the compressor until the day it finally failed in a more traditional way. LOW high/ high low pressure.

It was 5 years and 90,000 mile old oem replacement.

47F center vent after 15-20 minutes is good for Q.................as long a ambient display reads less than 100F.

If I end up replacing the compressor, joes price is around 625 dollars{is that new or reman}? or does anyone have any thoughts/experience with ordering a rebuilt one from a parts warehouse where prices seem to average around 300- big difference

The oem replacement comes as a kit with new modified flex hoses and accumulator which explains the extra cost ~~$550 vs say $300.

If you already have the correct hoses, then all you need is a compressor and new receiver dryer and system to flush out the lines and the condenser............to avoid bad bits from old compressor destroying the new unit fast.

How much you spend is a function of how long you want replaced components to last...........

Is one year satisfactory or do you want 4 or 6 years?http://www.ackits.com/index.cf...death

how do I determine if my stock 96q has the "proper hoses" ? also,is joes compressor new or rebuilt? do you recommend his as any better than the sub 300 unit in your link ?

Flush the existing flex lines to see if any internal damage from oil turning acidic. Particle count?

Obviously there is a reason why things come in a kit...........read the fine print of things that must be replaced to have a newish compressor stay in warranty.

Just swapping in a replacement compressor without a new dryer or going thru the entire disassembly and flush process is just asking for another compressor failure SOON.

q45tech,I called IOS,the 629.00 compressor does not include dryer or any hoses for the 96q-629.00 for compressor only! if I get one from arazona air for less than 250 for a rebuilt one,get new dryer from joe,and flush system- will the reman. compressor be a worthwile alternative to the 629 one from ios as far as performance/longevity? huge difference between 250 and 629,unless you feel reman. compressors are like reman. alternators on a q.

We have had only one failure [out of 100+] of a Nissan [dealer supplied] V515F that we have installed in the last 5 years [mine] at roughly 85,000+ miles.

We refuse to use customer supplied other compressors and suggest they go somewhere else for installation, however we have installed a few junk yard used or wrecked car oem compressors*............based on the look not too old or too dirty.

We try to buy 5 or 6 old Q per year for parts and the local junkyards call us if they get a decent looking compressor........since we always are buying something from them frequently.

The question is how long will a remanned last vs how long you plan on keeping the Q.................if the answer is 4-5-6 years oem is the way too go.

I'd make sure that was the problem before I replace it.Take it somewhere and have it checked.

Have you checked the inside temp sensor for lint and crap?Might be worth a look.
