Valid question!
For me, since it's nice and spring-y here in North Carolina, this lets me reduce the # of cycles of the top mechanism. Also, it reduces the exposure of the top to the elements.
I replaced my top a few months ago, and I want to extend it's life as LONG as possible.
I also just picked up a convertible boot. I'm a bit leery of the storage of it in the vehicle: the fact that you have to fold the "ears" in to make it fit in the bag/trunk. By "ears" I mean the parts on the sides that run lengthwise on the car as opposed to the part that goes sideways and covers the majority of the top when it's folded down.
That's why I pulled the trigger and bought this thing. Some posters have talked about removing their top assemblies for wieght purposes (Sun-belt residents I presume), and this might be helpful to them.
Everyone will have their own reasons to do it.
Or not.
Those are mine.
