Hey guys ..Anybody have a diagram showing were the dang' egr valve is on a J30?The fsm shows it dead center at the rear of the engine but its an overhead pic and doesnt show if its low , high , etc.

I took the Plenum cover off last saturday while I was letting the oil drain and still couldnt see it ..Im probably looking right at it and dont know it though ..

Any pics would be GREATLY appreciated ..Im tired of this cel light going on and off ..

Dude its right in the middle of the back of the engine. Almost on the top but it is burried a little. If you know what a EGR looks like you should not have a problem finding it.

lol ..Then I guess I dont know what it looks like ..Keep in mind I went from a 69 Chevy 1/2 ton to a J30

I should be able to find it ..I'll take off the plenum cover again and look for the above shown item thats not new and shiney .. hehe Looks like I might need a gasket before I pull it though . Do they tend to tear if its been on since day one ?

Here's a question for those who know ..Do I need to pull the EGR valve or just yank the hose and spray the cleaner in to loosen any buildup ??

I dont have a prob replacing it but if it just needs a decarbon blast Im all in

youll want to clean the EGR valve, however the EGR valve isnt really clogs, its the area between the EGR valve and the plenum

What exactly does the EGR control? and what are the common problems it causes?

EGR stand for exhaust gas recirculation. The valve is used to help reduce emissions.

Man .. that egr is a beootch to get too.Wes .. when you say area between the valve and the plenum , do you mean the tubes that go to either manifold ???I can manually move the valve from beneath and it seems a free as can be .

Yeah thatd be it.. It looks like on the J30 that the EGR valve bolts right onto the back of the plenum, and then has 2 tubes that give the EGR gas to each side... I bet those things clog up real nice!!!

Take those suckers off and douse them oven cleaner... Be sure to rinse with water good

the unhook from the manifold easy as heck ..But Im fighting the dang end that mounts to the egr body ..Gimme Mo' Room !!! lol

OK .. Now Im way confused Wes ..I pulled the tube of of the passenger side manifold ..Its plugged with a copper looking plug ??What the heck ??

DOOH !!!!Figured it out ..

The top of the tube is plugged and there is a oval shaped hole on the side of the tube facing rear ..Plugged up like a constipated COW !!!

Man what a learning curve the engines are compared to a old skewl 350 ..

Will do ..I havent noticed any power loss issues ..But if it was a slow progression I wouldnt .My Main concern was the CEL and the fact Im due for inspection in a month.As it would be a MAjor task to get the tubes out , My plan is the get both ends loose and blast em with a solvent then compress air ..Sound like a safe plan ??

Geezus they made this a pain in the butt task ..

Not only do the tubes not want to come out of the egr assy .. I cant get the bolts that mount the assy to the block lined up for shizz !!!

Should have stayed in bed this morning ..

I gave up on getting the tubes out of the egr assy ..Just a 1 bolt deal and they wouldnt budge ..Bolts came out easy .. but the tubes were seized up big time ..Just opened up the hole on the manifold end .Looks like the inner tube is coated with crud pretty good .. Gotta get them dang tubes out !!Or at least loose on both ends ..

Update.All I could do was open up the ends attaching to the manifolds . They were plugged tight ..Drove to work and No CEL !!!Hope it holds till I can clean the tubes out properly..Seems to idle smoother to . Didnt think that would happen ..

good deal!! Just muscle those bad boys off, and put some anti-seize on the nuts so they come off easy.

The bolts came out easy ..Its the pipe thats being a Turd Prob is I cant twist them , only pull straight out.Not sure how far in they go but the Manifold end goes in about 2 Inches .I'll get-r-done somehow

so are you trying to remove the EGR tube (from the exhaust manifolds) or the tubes going TO the INTAKE manifolds?

The two that go to the Intake right now .I may try to pry on the flange thats on the egr end after I get the mounting bolt out .
