Managed to score a Q clock on ebay last week… While putting it in, I decided to liven it up a bit by changing the color. Went one step further and changed the color of the HVAC display to red too. I’ve always thought it was a bit too bright at night anyway and I hate the boring green interior display lighting in Japanese cars and have always liked the red lighting of BMW…so, here u go.

The red as is not so bright you see here… the camera flash gave it a very bright-reddish look. The pic after this is a high exposure shot taken without the flash and is more in line with how it really looks. As you can see, the interior is far from stock and I don’t miss it a bit. I put the Head Unit in myself about 4 years ago. Gutted the bose entirely.

Ruby Red Q Clock!!! It matches the color of the Q too…. The red clock sitting there in the dash really gives the interior an aggressive look…especially at night which you’re about to see.

Oh…here’s when the console was pulled apart. Notice that I managed to stuff a small amp for the front speakers under the HU. You never know it’s there until you hear it! There another amp for the rear hidden above the gas tank. All very stealthy, I’m not one to show how much stereo I got to the world…(well, aside from Nico). All that fancy chrome and pretty wiring with light flashing when you open up the trunk so you can have your car stolen? Screw that! I hide everything.

Night shot…

Another night shot. The lighting of the HU doesn’t really match now but I plan to change it in the near future anyway. Many HU’s allow you to select the color of the display lights nowadays so I’ll get one that has red.

…and another with the radio off

Last shot…

This was a quick and cheap (as in it didn’t cost me a dime) mod. Just the way I like it!

…Drew….

Looks hot, Drew. Details on how you painted the clock?

I'm the same way about stereo. My amp is next to the gas tank, all wired very discreetly.

I happened to be at a tint shop when I saw some red tint sitting in the garbage. That's when the idea struck. I had to install the clock anyway so no better time.....

There are four screws securing the face of the Q clock. I removed it and applied the tint to the underside of the glass. This made the clock a bit dark at night so I pulled out the two bulbs at the back of the clock and removed the two blue rubber sleeves covering them. The clock lights up real nice now. Same goes for the HVAC display.... red tint to the underside. The look of it is very clean...no way to tell it's being done with tint.

Guess I was bored.

...Drew...

Good job man. I didnt' know that the 90-93 clocks lighted up that way, because 94-96 gold clocks light up entirely. Red clock is so cool.

while on the topic,do any other 94-96q owners wish the clock, and all the other buttons were a bit brighter on the max setting of the dimmer control? some seem hard to see- especially the hazard .remember old mb cars, the hazard button was the brightest light on the dash, standing like a beacon for easy finding during a true emergency-spoke well of their seriousness in design principals of engineering for function over fashion.

I agree. At night I have to stare at the clock to read the time, and on a sunny day you can barely see the hazard warning lights in the left corner of the instrument panel. It sounds like it's possible to brighten up the clock by removing the sleeves around the lights. I think I will give that one a try.

Virtually all the display lighting are lit by bulbs that are covered with rubber sleeves to dim them. You can simply remove the sleeves off the bulb to brighten the accessory.

I have two Q clocks for sale. I can hook up a 9V battery or two with with a wristband for those on the cutting edge of timepiece fashion.

Awesome! You just need to fix that EQ. I really like the red. I keep my lights just barely on because of the color.

What color are they? I think I need a new clock. Mine moves, but quite randomly. Like it'll say 5:40 at noon, then I'll park, come back, the clock will say 3:00.

Like it is super random. Remedies anyone?

I have a 90-93 standard gray clock and a 94' gold clock. Take your pick. $25 shipped.

The EQ has some red lights mixed in with the green so it's cool. I like the overall effect of red... it's a nice ambiance when you're driving at night.

Ah, a comedian.

How nice.

My Blaupunkt radio tells me the time as well as my cell phone. If I buy another clock, why would i get one that doesn't match my interior?

If you have one that works with my color scheme, then I'll thinkabout purchasing it.

Relax, I was just yankin your chain.

I didn't know black clocks existed. Do you have a black interior?
