Anyone know how the ignition is setup on carbed motors? Have never seen one, or a writeup on them. Iam getting ready to do something with my car, just not sure what. I have a KA24E sitting on the engine stand, but thinking of buying a CA18DET.

Trying to figure out what I will be happy with. I want a 1/4 mile time in the high 13s. But car is used for autoX and road courses.

Found it, seems like they use L18 distrib and a L18 drive thing out of the pump.

One thing Iam not understanding is:

L18 is in a 280zx? Why would you have to put parts from 210 into a 280 distrib?

What is the problem with the stock KA ignition?

Most carbing the ka24e will go to an early vacuum advance distributor due to simplicity, most are also in datsun and this isnt so much of a throwback.

You could do exactly as Rich (twistex) mentioned, and use the early datsun electronic. You can source these parts from 81-82 datsun 200sx, later model 510/610/710/620/720 etc.. The earlier version of these L series will have vacuum advance.

You can use any of the L/Z series ignition systems with your ka24e. You need to swap the distributor/oil pump drive, so the key/spline matches up. These will swap directly over from any L/Z to your sohc ka. The earlier electronic ignition systems were not ecu controlled, so simple component transfer.

Like it was mentioned in that link, the timing cover must be redrilled and tapped for the distributor attachment/adjustment base, simply a different (smaller) pattern. All other functional dimensions of the distributors are the same.

You can also find aftermarket electronic distributor/ignition systems for the L/Z series that will work with your carbed ka24e, or even one step further to a full aftermarket crank trigger based... MegaJolt Lite or electramotive come to mind.

BTW, here is a picture of Rich's (twistex) carbbed ka24e with the ignition he mentioned.

It is possible to swap the earlier datsun ignition over but you need to do some distributor hacking. In this situation, and unless you have all the parts already laying around, you should go with something a bit more modern and/or aftermarket. The key factor being that you want to be able to control it. You need the obvious tuning features of full control, as well as rev limit control etc..

Otherwise, you need to transfer the datsun points, base rotor, cap etc.. over to the 240sx ka24de distributor drive. It has been done, but not worthwhile imho.
