Okay, I know that this topic is half dead, but here is a new spin on it. I have a turbocharger from, what I was told is a 1985 300zx. When I search the cartridge number it tells me that it is a 1989-1990. It is water and oil cooled. I have been told that it is a T3, and it looks similar to one seen on a earlier RB20 series engine. It does not use any of the mounting flanges on the intake and exhaust sides like you see on a nissan t25 or any other production t3s (thunderbird, mustang, old old Chrysler, etc). It would use a normal clamp down connector on either side, in fact, it still has part of an orange reducer on the exhaust of cold side. It's numbers are 14420-21p60 and 432277-3 (I searched the number here: http://www.crturbos.co.uk/cat_08.htm). It has a .60 A/R on the cold side and .63 on the hot side. I have however been told that it is a TB03 instead of a T3. When I research the TB03, I find that it is a production model code that Garrett used that makes it a T28. It has a 7 bolt hole downpipe flange: 1 on top, two on either side at the top, and two at the bottom. On one of the sides, it has 2 studs in the side. It's flange on the turbine is rectangular 2 7/8 on the short side by about 4 1/4 inches on the long side. There are 4 bolt holes, 3/8 in dia., and separated by about 3 inches on the long side, and 1 1/2 on the short. The bolt holes (from center to center) measurements are about 1.75 on the short side and 3.5 on the long. Making it a T3 flange (researched using the new garrett GT Catalog: http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/do...4.pdf), Not a T25 or T28 flange. But I am getting some seriously mixed information here. Can anyone help me identify it as either a T28 or T3 or maybe some sort of hybrid. I can get more info if needed.

Does it look like:

???

If so, it's a Z31 T3.

IIRC, '84-85 were oil cooled only (or was it just '84...?)

'85-87 used oil/water T3s of the same design...

Then they went to T25s for '88-89...or something, this is off the top of my head, and I'm 'fuzzy' on Mondays.

...

Basically, if it's a .60/.63...then it's a T3 turbo. T25 and T28 DO NOT use a .63 hot side...

Yes, it looks almost just like that except I only have one port on mine to reference boost from, and the actuator is a bit smaller, but that could just be the camera angle. So, any good reason why I couldn't use a To4e for the cold side? Also, how did you come up with that downpipe? I have the old Z part and I assume you fitted this (at least at some point) to an S13. Is there any way to get some measurements?

You could use a T04 cold side...but you'd still be limited by the Stage I turbine.

Use this for a beginner-medium power setup (up to ~280rwhp or so, maybe a little more)...then get a real T3/T4.

And the outlet pipe CAN be used, but you have to do a bottom mount, and squeezing it past the steering column limits the location of the turbo flange on the mani. I've put one on an S14 for the 1st KA-T i did...and it's still working great for a friend of mine, as a daily driver!

So you made your own manifold, or did you buy one? Where did you locate the turbo?

The Z31 has to be bottom mounted, especially if you are using the internal wastegate and the 7 bolt downpipe setup.

Bottom mount...we used a JGS log manifold kit, and welded the flange on the bottom (obviously) and almost right off the #3 runner.

You could use it top mount, if you cut the outlet pipe off and made a new DP....but bottom mount is easier.

Be aware of the intake room, though...you're limited by the dizzy and the PS pump as to where you can run the intake pipe...FYI.

And the DP, what do you know about it? It looks to be a 45 degree bend and a piece of straight pipe. Say, 10" down and 3" pipe, then presumable it straightens out by the cat. Sound about right? Any info you can give?

You also said almost right off #3 runner, is that fore or aft? I know about how much flak I am likely to catch, but I have been looking at some of these stainless manifolds on ebay. I know they may be more likely to crack and have the welds fail, but I am looking for a clean kit that yield modest gains on a relatively stock KA. Anyway, the reason for the 3rd degree is that the manifolds available on ebay that are bottom mount beginning of the turbo mount at about the beginning of the third runner, see:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...QrdZ1and then with a flange and custom downpipe, I could just do all of the exhaust while I was at it for about 300 bones. Plus, I already have a pipe kit from an SR, so it makes sense to put my turbo where it would go for the SR. That and an FMU would give me boost for a good price, and what I believe to be about 240HP or so. A good start if it will keep up with an S2. Anything more would require some serious tuning, another rebuild, or both. I will burn that bridge when I get there. But I am interested in knowing where exactly the dump was, and maybe some measurements if you have them.
