dash lights out

The dash lights on my 1994 J30 are out. I understand its probably the dimmer switch. Can u direct to a page with directions for replacing? Also my high beam headlights go on periodically by themselves for a few minutes then go back to normal. Is this a related problem?

I have been chasing the cause of this problem in my '90 Q45a for a while and can't get it sorted. Have you checked to see if your tail lighs are still working? I have a dead short "somewhere" that blows the tail light fuse when I turn the tail lights on. When I replace the 10 amp fuse with a with a 20 amp the dash and tail lights come on for about 10 secs then the 20 amp blows. I have had 4 auto electricians spend many, many hours trying to fix it without success. Anyway check your tail light fuse for starters, it's a hell of a lot easier then pulling the dash out to replace the dimmer switch.

Dimmer switch and headlight relay like maxnix stated. Common problem on the J cars.

You have to resolder the dimmer contacts and just replace the relay.
