This is a post to gauge the interest in a Z32(300zx) transmission upgrade for the SR20. I recently got hooked up with an excellent fabricator and we are trying to sort out the details and feasability of this swap. He has finished the adaptor plate and mounted it to the SR while using the stock clutch and starter. There are a few things to sort out like the shifter and driveshaft, but these also seem to be small hurdles.

he will send pics later tonight so stay tuned.

what about the input shaft.. did you extend it.. also what is the 300z transmission good for... and what will it do to the gearing in the car..thinking this will be the way to go for anybody making more than 400whp..way to go

the way it is done..is the Z32 trans is machined down to allow for attachment of an adaptor plate. This plate is bolted to the SR and then the trans is mounted to the adaptor plate. The machining process is such that the input shaft will fit right into the back of the motor without changing the length. The stock clutch will be used as well as the stock starter.

The Z32 is good for about 700hp. The gears are MUCH beefier as is the output shaft, which is much shorter. The driveshaft will have to be custom but can be made for a few hundred.

In terms of the gearing..i don't have the numbers off hand, but just looking at the ratios, they are actually very close to the SR.

is this going to be avilible on the consumer side of things... there are bolts below where your plate stops.. what do you plan to do with that

that is one of the questions I asked my dude. I'm not sure if he's planning another plate on the bottom, or just make a complete cirlce to encorporate the oilpan. I will push the have one big ring to mount to block and oilpan.

Actually if you look at the top picture which shows the Z32 bellhousing sitting on the block...you will notice that the bellhousing is machined so there is a notch in it to fit around the adaptor plate. I have not talked to my fabricator yet about it...but i think the bottom bolts are close enough and only require that notch for the bellhousing to fit around the plate.

does the plate bolt to the block then the trans to the plate.. or is the plate going to be welded to the block

the adapter plate will bolt to the block and have recessed holes for the bolts. Then the bellhousing is machined so it bolts to the adapter plate at the block side and then sits flush on the bottom by the oilpan. the only bolts that will secure the trans are those to the block side, NOT the oil pan side.

Yes this will be available on the consumer side

the cost will be around 500$ for the adaptor plate, the modified, machined bellhousing, new transmission mount and all new grade 8 bolts.

the kit is being developed by a company called Mazworx who specializein custom drag and racing hardware.

there are a few different types of OS crossmissions. I don't have all the details but you can look up on the OS giken website what is offered for the SR. Last I checked it was ALL dog gear like you said..but some of the other kits incorporate a syncro/normal type gear for first gear.

so i have a few other pictures for you all

ok...that's it for now..
