I respectfully disagree... I talked to the people at tire rack and discount and the kind of patches that are from the inside out (where they dismount the tire and fix the inside) are warranted under their warranty and are also convered by the manufacturer... The tech said the tires are just safe as they were before....Z wrote:A tire that has a patch of any kind (for a repair) is instantly de-rated in the top speed. You must not take patched tires to their original rated speed
Wes, you are absolutely correct that patches are safe for all normal highway speeds that we drive at. It is the high speed issues, at or near the max rated speed of the undamaged tire, that are a concern!elwesso wrote:I respectfully disagree... From the Michelin warranty manual available at http://www.michelin.com wrote:Speed ratings are based on laboratory tests which relate to performance on the road, but are not applicable if tires are underinflated, overloaded, worn out, damaged, altered, improperly repaired, or retreaded.
From the Tire Rack paper on speed ratings (see http://www.tirerack.com/tires/...ge=38) wrote:It is important to note that speed ratings only apply to tires that have not been damaged, altered, under-inflated or overloaded. Additionally, most tire manufacturers maintain that a tire that has been cut or punctured no longer retains the tire manufacturer's original speed rating, even after being repaired because the tire manufacturer can't control the quality of the repair.
It is pretty clear! From the Bridgestone/Firestone web site (see http://www.tiresafety.com/size...a.htm) wrote:NOTE: The speed rating is void if the tires are worn out, damaged, repaired, retreaded, or otherwise altered from their original condition. If tires are repaired, retreaded, or otherwise altered, they should not be operated at higher than normal highway speeds.

More interesting: driving at 5mph on the highway or parking at 140mph!Q451990 wrote:The future Mrs. Roberts can't park at 5MPH... can't imagine her at 140...
