94 Q45, 158,000 miles, was looking under the car today and the oil appears to be leaking from the area that the tranny mounts to the engine, it's definetly oil. Is the rear main seal a common problem in this engine with this many miles? Is replacing it as simple as dropping the tranny and replacing the seal or what? oil leak doesn't appear to be coming from top of engine or near valve cover areas, Thanks

Rear seal leaks aren't common as far as I know. You have to pull the tranny, torque converter and drive plate to get to the seal. Then it's pull and press. Make sure it isn't from the oil pressure sensor or one of the core plugs. I'd do a dye test to be more certain before pulling the tranny off. It's not easy.

Driver's side of the engine, in line with the oil pump and covered by the manifold.

It's also possible to have a split PCV hose near the "Y" that feeds the AAC valve... I had this once and it left some oil in the valley that would run or blow back and appear at the point you mentioned.

It is also a good idea to replace the PCV valve along with the seal. if the valve has a restriction (stuck closed), crankcase pressure can build and result in leaks that often times may not occur.

Welcome back, autotech43. Long time no post.

1 metal one on VH45DE, 2 plastic ones on VH41DE. Same price per unit for either.
