Ok, i found a 240sx finally that i like and im pretty sure i wanna buy it so i want your opinion, here goes. Body - Good shape, no dents, scratches, things like that, could use a wash and paintjob which i would do anyway. Interior - also pretty good shape, one small spider web looking crack near one of the vents but is fixable or easily ignorable if i have to. its a 91 hatch, super hicas. Engine - does not run, he said he thinks it needs a new timing chain and head gasket but he's not positive since he hasnt tried to find out since he doesnt drive it, has 135k miles on it. He's asking 1000 which honestly for the shape its in i think it is probably worth that to me but i thought about offering him 800, but i kinda feel bad doing that since 1) nice guy, sat and talked to me about the car and about random stuff for like an 1 hour while he let me look around the car and take pics with my phone to show my brother. 2) he's a friend of a friends. and 3) he did offer to hook me up with someone he knows that would tow it to my house (which is not real far but not real close either, to his) for like 45 dollars. i wanted everyone elses opinion.OH yea, 2 more things, i'm not extremely worried about the engine because when i get the money i'm gonna swap it anyway which should be kinda soon. Another thing is my buddy might be buying a 240 from a friend of his and he doesnt want the engine, just the body and he's getting his for cheap cuase the back quarter panel has a dent in it, and i could probably get a whole new engine with like 90k miles on it for around 250-350 dollars

Call your local tow company and see what they will charge to move your car.I got a tow for $20.Check that first. As long as there is no rust sounds decent. But don't know if engine runs.I paid $600 for my 240 shell. That came with a blown headgasket.Had minor damage.

engine doesnt run, he said he doesnt know whats wrong he never tried to find out. He said he thinks its headgasket and timing chain but he's not positive. I'll try to post pics as soon as possible, but the body is in good shape and everything looks like its ok. Looks like it could all use a good cleaning though. Maybe ill offer 800 cash and see what he says, if he says he doesnt wanna do that ill probably just give him a grand cause its in way better condition than any of the others i've looked at.

This one sounds a little better. You can find engine for a few hundred. I would offer him 700 and work from there. You can also get a tow for pretty cheap if you call around.

thanks, i was gonna start off with offer of 800 since he was asking a grand. you think he'd go for 700 since the cars not running? or maybe 750 would have a better "ring" to it for him lol. i dont know. Also, how can i find out if the car i am getting has lsd?

there should be a orange VLSD sticker somewhere on the diff. It may have fallen off. All HICAS car have VLSD. You also may want to list all the bad things about the car before you offer 700. You almight want to list prices with repair or parts needed.

Ok, but i couldnt really think of anything bad other than the small spot in the dash, and that the engine isnt running, and he doesnt really know why and i wont know until i start tearing things down so to say.

and as i promised... (it was raining, but still) the pics....he said the car overheaded and blew the headgasket and threw the timing chain so i am guessing that the valves are all bent and the head is warped... just my assumption but we'll find out tomorrow when he has a battery in it and tries to let it "turn over" so we can hear it. THE SMALL PALE CIRCLES ARENT THE CAR, IT WAS THE WATER ON THE CAMERA LENSE LOL

Front end

Right front quarter

Right (passenger) side door

Right rear quarter

Rear end

Full interior

Small spot in the dash (no biggie)

other small spot in the dash (also no biggie)

The engine is probably screwed but I have an engine and a 5spd tranni lined up pretty cheap so what would you give ASSUMING you were only buying the shell.

i would offer 750 or 800, that gives you some extra cash, if he takes it, for the rest of a manual swap

I'm sayin' 700 cash. That spoiler looks like it has rust under it: not a fun fix. Auto, useless motor....700 cash. Hopefully it has an LSD to make it worth while.

What went down and how:

We (me and my father) showed up saturday and the kids house, he was asking 1000 dollars for the car, my father asked him if he knew what was wrong with it and the kid said "it overheated and the headgasket blew and the timing chains off" so we figured blown head and bent valves. Anyway it had no battery in it so he couldnt try and turn it over for us... surprised? no. lol. Well my father was like ill give you 500 cash the way it is if we can take it home tonight, the guy thought about it for a second then was like, i cant take that for it (i guess waiting for us to offer more) so my father was like well if can you get a battery in it tomorrow? the kid said ya and we agree'd to come over around noon. We showed back up and the kids dad (who obviously showed he knew absolutely nothing about these cars) tried to tell us he had a batter charger hooked to it but it wouldnt turn cause it had a leak or something. I was thinking "bs" but anyway. My father tried to turn it by hand (by the belts or something, nope, locked up tighter than grannies moonshine) Then he tried to tell me the car blue booked for 2500 (also bs) (1. Cars that arent running wont blue book i tried. 2. that year with that many miles running and in excelent condition from a private seller books for 1850) Then he tried to jack the price an extra 100 dollars and was like "take it or leave it, some tuner will come along and give that for it" (i was thinking "you know lots of rich stupid tuners?") anyway i didnt get the car so im still lookin. I thought about callin the kid though cuase he was super cool when i talked to him and just be like "sorry that didnt work out for the both of us, it was nice meeting and talking to you, hope theres no hard feelings and if you ever decide you get tired of it sitting in your front yard ill give ya 650 cash for it and ill pay to get it towed that day, if you change your mind gimme a call."

Ya, i think you did the right thing. But on an s13, you really want a hatch with no spoiler=no rust . And i would prefer a running car myself, not someone elses problems. But anyway, have you tried autotrader.com? or ebay.com? I bought my car off ebay and got a kick a** s14 that was always female driven at a nice price. I don't know your budget at all but I saved for mine for a long time and finally got my dream car! But I hope you find a nice 240, took me 4 mos!!! I think i would pass on that one though, try autotrader and ebay, and if you want i can look on autotrader and ebay and nico classifieds for you if you want to e-mail me at [email protected] with what you are looking for in a 240, how much you want to spend, and your zip code, for the distance thingy, e.t.c, I will gladly help you find a good 240 for you. Just wanting to help a fellow nico member find a nice car. Let me know

-Darren
