Here's the scenario:

When I took my engine to the machine shop to have all this work done on it, a lot of the external engine components (like brackets, braces, motor mounts, etc) were still bolted onto the block. Those components that were removed had all the bolts in their appropriate, respective holes so I wouldn't forget where they went.... I did not take a picture of the engine minus intake/exhaust manifolds, unfortunately, and my memory isn't that great and this was about 7 weeks ago...

So I picked up my engine last Wednesday, and the guy hands me a large box of stuff that bolts onto the engine, as well as about 40 or so bolts and says "here, you're gonna need all of these!" (I could have sworn he was grinning when he handed them to me). The great thing about all these bolts is that almost all of othem were the exact same diameter and thread pitch, so they could have gone in multiple holes in the block; they only varied a few millimeters in length. Luckily I was able to pretty much figure out where all the bolts went (not thanks to my Chilton's FSM, which is terrible) by seeing if they bottomed out when threading in and using some common sense. Long story short, the engine is just about ready to go in, but I still have some bolts left and I have NO CLUE where they go.

Here are the bolts:

The four big ones do not fit in any of the remaining holes in the block, and they are of a bigger diameter than almost all the other bolts used for the block. What's weird is that if you look at the picture, the tapered bottom of these 4 bolts look like they are stripped and used to have threads?

Now heres the pictures of all the remaining holes that bolts could potentially go into:

This is the fire-wall side of the head. There are three holes (the pipe at the bottom is the EGR line, on the far left of the picture is the last runner of the turbo manifold), and the two black semi-circles are part of the rubber valve cover gasket.

The two smaller bolts in the picture fit these holes, but I know these holes bolt to the exhaust side of the block to hold wires for the downpipe. Any idea what, if anything, goes here? I can't find a thing..

The following picture shows the exhaust side of the block.

At the left of the picture (held in by four bolts) is the bracket that holds the motor mount. There are two holes without bolts to the right of this. The one lone bolt in the first picture threads into both of these. Is anything supposed to go here? I don't have any pieces left over in or out of the engine bay that I can find, and none of the bolts in the picture fit these holes.

Next is a picture of the intake side of the cylinder head. In the top left corner is the fuel rail.

What attaches to the two holes at the top left corner of the picture? I'm assuming some grounding wires that are part of that huge bundle of wires/connectors that runs along the fuel rail...And that metal eyelet at the bottom of the picture is the end of the wire that runs to the knock sensor...where should I bolt this one in? I don't think it really matters as long as it's screwed in somewhere around the area...it could probably go in the two holes in the top of the picture even

The next picture is the intake side of the block. The cylindrical thing is the starter.

Does anything go in either those 2 holes to the left of the starter or the hole to the bottom of the starter? I'm thinking maybe no since all of these holes are pretty rusted (albeit threaded), meaning there probably weren't bolts in their previously...

That's it for now...I just want to make sure I'm not forgetting something major before it goes back in...

Any help is much appreciated

some oof those bolts are for the 2 brackets that go from the block to the intake manifold, 1 is just a pipe looking bracket, the other is a bigger bracket i guess to support the intake manifold.the other are probably engine mounts and stuff like the A/C bracket and 2 brackets that go from the block to the transmission.(1 on each side of the block).

just checked the pics and you allready seem to have the brackets that go to the transmission, there are some holes that really nothing go there am pretty sure, i had some of those myself.(on the exhaust side am pretty sure)

The intake manifold to block brackets are already bolted in...one bracket took 2 bolts, one took 3. Whats weird is that the FSM showed a third intake manifold brace, but I do not remember a third brace anywhere, and there's no possible place for a third brace. Very likely, this third bracket is found on the Altima KA (the book covers altima and 240 KAs)...just one more damn thing that Chilton's doesn't mention...

AC bracket is already bolted up, so are all the transmission gussets...

I just don't get where the hell those 4 bolts go, they fit literally NO WHERE!

Looks like I just answered most of my own questions, mostly by carefully studying old pictures of my car engine...

First of all, the FSM available online that's strictly for the 240sx is VASTLY better than my Chilton's FSM. I have a laptop, so it looks like my laptop will accompany me to the garage every time I do work...

Secondly, I found out where those four big rusty bolts go: they're the transmission brace bolts, 2 on each side. I've literally been stumped for like 3 days as to where the hell these things go...

The smaller two bolts in the picture screw into the exhaust side of the head to hold eyelets for sensors.

So that leaves only *one* bolt left....God only knows where the hell that thing goes, but I think only one bolt left over aint bad...hahah

Those three holes on the back of the head above the EGR tube aren't used for anything, neither are the two holes to the right of the exhaust side engine mount, neither are the ones near the starter.

Anyway, I'll give $5 to whoever finds out where that last bolt goes

those ones behind the head might had stayed their from the s13 which has some extra emissions vaccum crap back there, prolly just left the design the same

the two holes next the the exhuast side engien mount arent touched, i actually used one for my msd knock meter, dont worry about that
