I get kind of angered when people make these "out there" statements that dont really have any facts...
The oil life monitor IMHO isnt a good thing to go by for the sake of this discussion...
However I do agree with jesda in that with the notorious sludgetastic engines, you gotta change the oil frequently to keep it in check. Even then it could be efforts in futility!
The northstar is very similary designed to the VH45, so theres no reason that the VH45 cant go any farther (or shorter) in OCIs than the northstar.... Oil life monitor is kind of retarted IMHO, but good for people who only want to do the bare minimum, and think you can go farther on a fill of oil... I guess americans like having the car tell them when to change the oil, than to have some sticker tell them or for them to decide on their own free will...

you can easily decide your viscosity by doing a simple oil pressure test. If you pressure readings at hot idle are lower you need to bump up the visc.... Start with what the MFG recommends and tweak!
As for the OCI it doesnt really matter what engine its in, it has to do how the oil stands up in that engine (which is kind of the same).... Theres no way you can say "you can change the oil every 8k on this engine, and only 4k on this engine", just from different designs.... I think that some engines are more prone to being harder on oils, but it wont make a world of differences... I could be wrong!
I dont understand how BMW thinks they can go 12k on oil changes and still last a long time.. I doubt we see many BMWs of today reach 250k like we did with the old ones!
In all honesty, i think going farther in OCIs is like a macho thing... "Oh my car only needs to change the oil every 5k because im using M1 syn!".... this kind of goes against the american way because we usually like to do the easiest. This requires thinking and use of logic, whereas its easier just to go and change the oil every 3k and have it done with!
I may be wasting my money on changing the oil every 4k, but I dont think i am.... I dont have many other things id rather spend my money on that gives me a lot of pleasure like the Q does....
