Does the Y33 have sealed beams or bulbs that can be replaced. Is there an upgrade over the OEM fitment?

You can always go with the HIDs from the later ones.....

Yes!You can upgrade to Silverstar - quite an improvement over OEM lights!Or you can go 90/100W (not legal) and blind opposums on the road. Cheers!

I agree Petr. Put in the silver stars around xmas. no, they're not like HID, but not yellow and not blue. make a nice difference.

97q45t would be the resident expert on HIDs in a 97, as he did the conversion....

HID is simple, just get 99 and up headlights adopt them on 97-98 and you will have HID! If I could I would put 90/100W super whites and killed oncoming traffic. Cheers!

90/100W might fry wiring. Look in the Articles for Zinkie13 conversion.

Don't think all the wiring is there for conversion to OEM HID, certainly not the leveling switch, etc. Seems like headlight shape is slightly different.

One reason I recommend 1999 and especially 2000 and 2001 FY33 to prosepective FY33 purchasers. Many significant upgrades on the latter two, most of which are hidden.

My friend Bryan with a white Q has done the HID swap in his 97 and it's a direct fit, the headlight shape is the same, and they fit right in, only thing is wiring and mounting the ballast.

I have Silverstar's now and am happy with the nice white color. I had PIAA super-plasma's which I loved the slightly purple color, but one burnt out and screw 75 bucks for bulbs. (I didn't pay near that for mine)

Did he graft-on the interior headlight adjustment?

Thought there was a reason Zinkie didn't go this route.

That I'm not sure. I'll ask the next time I talk to him.

Actually, it's more white than golden

Honestly the PIAA's were brighter, but the Silverstars are easy to get and much cheaper.

90/100W bulb definitely will burn the factory wiring and/or connector if the larger wiring is not used.

The leveling system on the '99-'01 headlight housing is simple. There's a 3-pin connector from the headlight housing for that system. 2 pins are fed by +12V and Ground, the other pin is connected to +12V by a resistor. Different resistor values will result in different angles of the headlight reflector. What the factory leveling adjusting switch does is basicly switching between different resistors. I found a connector that fit the connector from the housing perfectly and a variable resistor (forgot what the value is) from a local electronics parts store. Turning the variable resistor (like a volume knob) will make the reflectors go up and down.

Putting the leveling system with the conversion is optional because it doesn't affect the operation of the headlights. The reflectors just stay where they were at when the wires disconnected.

OEM HID vs Projector HID Conversion:

OEM HIDPro: Very easy. '99-'01 HID housing will fit '97-'98 Q45s perfectly. The ballasts are mounted under the headlight housings from the factory. All you need to know is how to cut the wires and connect them back. A schematic for the headlight system would be helpful.Con: '99-'01 headlight housings are hard to find for a relatively inexpensive price. Dealers cost is around $1200 each. Sometimes they pop-up on Ebay though only 1 side, not the whole set.

Projector HID ConversionPro: OEM projector kits are easy to find. Light output and pattern are superior to OEM because of the projector design. Unique on a Q. Con: Lots of time for fabrication and adjustment. Overall cost for the conversion project will exceed the OEM housing replacement way.
