My climate control display on my '91Q has started acting up. Some of the time it will not 'go on' when I start the car. It is apparently an issue with a bad connection, because a judiciously placed bump on the side of the console will usually make it appear. The actual controls appear to work fine.

Has anyone experienced this problem? What is the recommended repair and how much work is involved?

Thanks

Tim

THis is a VERY common problem with the 90-93 Q.. The best bet is to send it away to jerry tucker for a rebuild.....

Apparently, some fail and some dont... jesda has 192k on his and apparently he doesnt experience any problems.... Ive heard you can sometimes take it out and check for bad solders on the PCB... I dont know if your up for that..... IIRC its about $100 to have it rebuilt... however, I bet that you could do it yourself... I might do a search about this, but generally people end up wasting their time and sending it to Jerry anyway! You might get lucky and score a working one from a later Q...

Maybe another thing you could try is to wire up a 94 controller.. If your up for the task, i have a spare controller and amplifier (the 94 had 2 control boxes vs 1)......

BTW, sorry I didnt stop by, i sent that email hoping youd call me since I didnt check my email before I left... Oh well!

I assume its just the display that goes out, and the actual unit keeps working.....

Wes,

With that 94 display... you say it has two boxes vs. one? I wondered about that since I bought that one a few months back and all I got was the display portion. Much smaller. Can you take a picture of the amplifier and it's connections? I wonder if it could be plugged in to the 90-93 connector on the car and then plug the amplifier into the 94 display?

Funny you asked because I have a pic ready to go...

Basically there are 2 large harness connections that go from the amplifier and then a small connector to the display.....

I took this stupid box out thinking it was the cruise control unit, and it turned out to be the amplifier for the climate control..... The cruise control unit is a ***** and a half to get out!!!

Wes:

How do you get access to this amplifier/display in the console. In other words, do I have to tear the whole damn dash apart to fix this problem?

Like I said in my initial post, I think it's some kind of connection issue. I can get it to work by smacking the console on the passenger side, but I don't want to do this too often.

I'm OK with a soldering iron, and have done circuit board repair from time to time, but it seems to me like it might be an oxidized connector or something like that.

All you have to do is take the dash panel off, and pull out the module

IM gonna be coming up that way next weekend to do some DIY work to the Q, if youd like we could try the 94 climate rig thing.....

Which dash panel do I have to remove? The one on the side of the console or the one on the face of the console? Are there any 'tricks' to remove the panel. I'd rather not break anything trying to get it apart.

Maybe we can hook up Friday. What time will you be coming through?

I resoldered every point on mine... no help. I want to order a batch of capicitors next and try that. I know I should pony up the $100 and forget about it, but I'm cheap that way...

Yup,

I agree! I wont pay 100 dollars to fix that, its not that big of a deal, plus i know how to solder and repair circut boards so it would be twice as dumb. Just gotta do like u said and order the new capacitors and what ever else i may need. i noticed when i took mine apart that the board was in great shape, no leaks! no corrosion anywhere, but still not working when needed.

If you order the capicators, and that fixes it let us know! I ordered a used one from a salvage yard... big waste of $$. Got my money back because the display was dim on it too. That's the only problem with buying a used one... the issue is so common that it's likely to be bad too. I ordered one out of a 1993 that has the same p/n as the replacement you'd buy from Joe now, but the display was dim for some reason. Almost looks like the display unit itself was damaged...

The $100 isn't for the labor, but for the knowledge JT has figuring out how to fix them. I'm just guessing that it's the capicators. For $15 in parts and a couple hours in labor I'll know for sure... just haven't done it yet.

I've found it hard to part with $100 just so I can see a freakin display. I just adjust the temp by zeroing the temp (hold the down button down) and adjusting up from there.

BTW, I've tried soldering every single point on two boards with no luck. The longest time I got it to work for was by flexing the board (till the display lit) then inserting a piece of rubber tubing to keep the board in the flexed position, but eventually even that method succumbed to darkness.

Just one of the minor gripes with these old Q's...

Minor gripe = Climate control display, Bose Speaker caps...and many more

Major gripe = Timing chain guides (and many more )(now that I fixed since it may mean a new engine)

Why bother with the Q? Punch the gas while doing 55 and watch that smile spread across your mug.

Nobody has got one back repaired from jerry tucker and seen what has been done to it? We're all Q owners here, i think we all deserve to be able to fix our own HVAC Display problems. For the cost of some parts not 100 plus shipping.

C'mon, get rich elsewhere!

Hey!

Wasnt trying to flame jerry, my bad, just want my display working today or tommorow, i cant send mine to the USA to get fixed, i live in canada.

I read the previous posts, but i dont see anything saying what exactly was fixed except the circle covering the bad spot on the board, if that one was fixed by Jerry? Other then that i only see people sayin bad solder points or leaky caps. I had some brown dried watery looking stuff on my board, but no way of telling where it came from?

The one with the circle drawn was not fixed by JT. I think I can confirm that it's not bad solder joints... I have re-heated EVERY joint on the board in a desparation attempt. Next step... order some caps...

Well i got it narrowed down to a small spot on the board, but of course the spot is under a huge IC, so i cant reach it. Jerry is starting to look good to me unfortunitly. But does he deal with Canada?

A while ago I went through the whole process. Replaced the leaking caps and rewetted every land. It worked better - meaning I would see the display come back on frim time to time. Flexing the board works reliably to show the display when it is in my hand, but I didn't get it to work reliably in the dash. Maybe it is that the connection between the front and the back of the board has a cold solder somewhere. I didn't have the patience to figure it out.

Since my son drives the '92 mostly, its up to him to shell out the $100 if he wants it fixed.

Good luck with your attempts.
