Q45 Rear Speaker/Amp R&R

How does one remove & replace the right rear speaker & amplifier in a 1990 Q45?

Scattered about Nico are a bunch of threads on the 1991/1992 Q45 Bose speaker & amplifier replacement; but I didn't find a lot of detail on the R&R.

Since I'm expecting to remove & replace my right rear (whining) speaker & amplifier assembly, I may as well start a new thread specifically on the R&R.

Any advice on how to go about it would be welcome ... Meanwhile I'll do some of my own research (I sure hope the rear deck doesn't need to be removed like it did for the fuel pump & fuel pump controller R&R).

I'm confused whether the rear seat & parcel shelf needs to be removed or if only the trunk bulkheads need be removed to R&R the right rear Bose speaker & amplifier in the 1990 Q45.

1) According to the http://carstereohelp.com web pages (see details below), access is through the trunk.

2) Yet, the bulk of the Nico posts (see list included with this post) indicate access through the rear seat similar to the fuel pump R&R I've done in the distant past (from which these photos are taken).

QUESTION: Do we R&R the 1990 Q45 rear speaker & amp from the back seat or from the trunk?

As another reference, I just now picked up the related Q45 rear-speaker-defect PDF from the National Highway & Traffic Safety Administration web site.

2) Enter the campaign number 98V284000 and press the SEARCH button.

The diagrams in the included December 4th. 1998 ITB98-056 titled "1991-1992 Q45 SPEAKER AMPLIFIER REPLACEMENT" intimate the amplifier (AMPLIFIER KIT P/N 28061-64U25) and amplifier cover should be R&R'd from the trunk.

Likewise for the March 31, 1999 update (ITB98-056a, of the same title).

But I suspect I need to R&R the entire speaker assembly (to ship to Bose, for example, for replacement).

QUESTION: Does R&R of the entire speaker assembly require removal of the rear seat back and rear parcel shelf?

I just found a removal & replacement procedure (with photos) for the 1990 Q45 rear SPEAKER (and not just the amplifier) at http://carstereohelp.com/strinfiniti.htm

Unfortunately, this third-party web page http://carstereohelp.com/stereoremovalI ... htm(titled "'90-93+ Infiniti Q45 Rear Seat Removal for BOSE Amplifier and Speaker Removal and Installation") says we must remove the rear seat back & parcel shelf.

It seems the 4 screws holding the 6x9 inch Bose speaker assembly to the rear deck are screwed in from the top!

You can remove just the amp from the trunk by pulling the four screws on the bottom of the case. Carefully unplug the two wires that actually feed the speaker assembly - the mounting tab that holds the terminals in place on the speaker can break.

If you're going to have Bose rebuild the amp, go ahead and remove the entire assembly since that's the only way they'll do it. (this requries removing the back seat and sundeck.

The good thing is that they'll replace the 14 year old dry pasper speaker cone, so it's worth the trouble. I'd go ahead and have them rebuilt as a pair since they all seem to fail at about the same time.

Foam surround breaks down and tears or speaker compliance changes.

Some of the early amps were soldered plus of course 90 and 91 and 92 amps were different. 90 has different plugs from 91-96.

Far from true.

Just replaced the factory Clarion speakers in Mama's 97 Pathfinder.

NO RUBBER remining. None. It was all dust in the bottom of the speaker housing. Paper was shot as well.

I can only imagine how much better new rear deck speakers would sound, especially given the harsh environment they operate in.

Rubber is compliant and will break down with ozone, age and use. Reconing with the correct material with a full 180° radius is important. Paper is fine for the cone material as long as it is dry and not impacted by sharp objects, kid's fingers, etc.
