my AC Clutch and bearing are shot, and i don't want to be without AC this summer so i need to replace the AC Clutch and bearing.

they are HELLA expensive for a new one $450+...do you guys think i could get away with a complete used compressor used from a junkyard Maxima?

I would say that would be doable if your had the tools and
know how. On my 95 the cool air quit blowing. I used some
Auto Zone tools, the AC manifold (to test hi and low side pressure),
an evacuator, and a device to insert compressor oil into the low side. I took my time with it and figured out the compressor was weak and evacuated and recharged the system. I also checked for leaks and found
none.

For some reason it just didnt work so I took it to the shop and for $100
bucks they go it going pretty good, though not frosty but thats ok considering the age of the AC.

I also know from the FSM it takes some special tools to take off the clutch
and put it back on.

Bottom line is to go the whole way with the job or not at all since it sure
appears to me that lots of expertise is needed.

The compressor assembly (compressor, clutch and bypass valve) is @ $425 from IoS, http://www.infinitipartsusa.com. I hope it's not a typo. It would be better to replace the air drier (hydrator) if you're going to break the AC line.

Just a reminder, you're not supposed to discharge freon into the ATM so you will need specialized tools if you're going to do it yourself.

Check with autozone and see if they have the pulley wrench and clutch disc remover tools available to rent/borrow. If you can get your hands on those two tools, you should be able to just swap out your clutch and pulley for a used one (will be hit and miss, sure, but if my Max still has a good clutch and bearing after 16 years, plenty of 9 year old Maxes should, too).

Check pages 11 and 115 here for more info on those tools and what's involved in swapping the parts.

A quick check of Autozone's website shows they do carry both those parts (and the pulley puller, too) but they list them as Ford compatible. I'd head into a store and see if they have Nissan versions available. Renting them will cost you money up front, but you'll get it back when you return them.

If you just swap the bad parts, you won't have to mess with breaching the coolant system or any of that stuff.

sorry to bump a slightly old thread. You're saying I can take the pulley and clutch off my compressor and replace them with a junkyard one without disconnecting the lines and fix my ac? My compressor went bad and also fried my alternator. I change the alternator only to find out the compressor was dragging when I had it on. I know the old alternator was bad because it was billowing smoke out the back of it. This is on a 99 Maxima.
