Post Title: Hybrid Car ?? Posted by:jdawson1960 at 6:45 AM 11/12/2008 I am getting ready to buy another car now. When gas prices were $4 plus, I was really thinking about buying a hybrid. Now with gas prices back down to $2 or less, should I.
I understand the environment situation, however with the cost of a hybrid being $5k plus more, I will never make the money back over the life of the 4-5 years I am going to keep the car.
So any feedback of your experience owning a hybrid, or why I should or shoulnt would be appreciated.

With the fuel economy on some cars today, it doesn't make much sense to get a hybrid, depending on your driving situation. The altima 2.5 can get you upwards of 35 mpg on the highway, and still yield high 20's around town - other cars in the nissan lineup with the 2.5 or smaller engine do the same. These cars also have relatively low emissions, so they're not a big environmental issue.
Honestly, it doesn't much financial sense to get a hybrid. If you are that concerned, consider waiting for cars like the Chevy Volt to come out, which are pure electric cars. They are a much better decision over the regular hybrids. However, if you are looking at buying say a Escalade Hybrid, this might help with your gas bill, and seeing your spending a lot anyway, the cost isn't that bad...

A hybrid can save you as much as about 60% on fuel, so you really have to consider how much you drive. Also hybrids save gas in the city, highway fuel consumption is similar. But marlin is right that in many financial situations they don't make sense, but you cant really make a bad decision. Just make sure you get the right hybrid, some of them suck! Make sure its a Nissan or a Toyota!
