Guess its about time I do one of these I've had the car since april its no where near done but I've made some nice progress so far.
Before I bought the car it was rocking a 450hp SR and looked like this

The previous owner who owns his own shop building some badass cars stripped it and planned on doing a VQ swap so I got a low mileage engine and 2 z33 6 spd transmissions off him.

good way to clean the underbody of a car lol
delivered in april like this filled with parts

First step was to clean it out and start stripping that nasty tar, cleaning up any surface rust (which there was barely any), and paint with undercoat

got tired of hammer and chisel method so got some dry ice
nice!
I used Rust Bullet on the floor pan and DupliColor undercoat everywhere else

B-quiet on the roof
rusty dash support vs clean dash support

why not paint this too

AND this is where it stands right now with Raammat sound deadener, carpet is on order should be in next week hopefully

![]() How long did it take to get the trunk & front/passanger side all stripped? |
Between work and house hunting the past few months its taken a while I started stripping her down in may and just finished up the rammatt this past weekend so a few months. Sounds like a long time but I only get to work on a few hours a week and I'm working on a few other small related projects at the same time. I'm really in no rush to finish so I want it to be done right. Luckily I didn't have to deal with any rust issues or it would've taken a lot longer, this car came from texas.

Dry ice makes fast work of that nasty tar crap let it sit a few mins and it chips right off, if you can't get dry ice near you get out the hammer and chisel and go to town for a few hours have plenty of beer handy too

1. stock headliner not in bad shape for its age I could probably clean it but I hate the gray I want it black

2. strip the fabric off the headliner it should peel off with a little force

3. take some 80 grit sandpaper and sand off any left over glue/fabric/etc

4. I got black headliner fabric at jo ann fabrics it was pretty cheap I think $10, also 2 cans of 3M super 90 $20. Spray the super 90 on both the headliner and the fabric wait about a min then press fabric onto the headliner smoothing out any kinks. I worked in small sections at a time its too hard to try and do the entire headliner in one shot so I worked back to front in about 1' sections, let that dry then continued. Sorry didnt take any pics during I only have 2 hands lol

I think it came out pretty good for my first time, its not perfect but close enough. It was a little tough around the weird contours work slow around those areas.
The carpet came in last week gonna try to get to that this weekend if I have time.

ah I should've explained better...soak an old rag in some paint thinner and the leftover tar crap should just wipe right off it might take a little elbow grease but the paint thinner dissolves the leftovers so it looks clean like in the second pic

I got the 62 sq ft roll it will probably be just enough to do the floor and doors and maybe 4-5 sq ft of ensolite should do it, ran me around $200 not bad and much cheaper than dynamat. If you want to do a little more than I did def get the 100 sq ft roll you'll need it.

| Hey man... I am amased in the work you have done to your car. I am about to start with the paint in my car and would like to do the same thing to my car. I was wondering what materials did you use to do that (I see you used dry ice and a tourch). What did you use them for? And of course how do you do all this. I would really appreciated if you would help me out. THANKS!! |
Hammer and chisel for some of it, its painfully slow doing it this way but it works. The torch can soften it up a little bit just don't overheat it and burn it. I did about half the car that way and got tired of that so I picked up some dry ice, that was simple just dump the dry ice on the sound deadener let it sit about 10-15 mins and it freezes it enough it'll chip right off with hardly any force. Search around some a bunch of people used the dry ice method

For the headliner and for next time working with fabric, a heat gun does wonders. Just 10-15 sec with a heat gun will make the fabric stretch and fit those contour lines and then all you have to do is wait for the glue to set. Also, i got a heat gun from harbor freight for 10 bucks, well worth the 10 dollars.

I'm in the middle a similar (way it should have come from the factory) build with my hatch. The new carpet I have fit ok except in the rear floor pan area. It doesn't sit all the way down on the floor so I'm afraid if someone sits in the back seat when it gets stepped on it will get pulled out. Still not sure how I will get around that.
What do you plan to do about the sunvisors? Seats?

| Gldnwolf - You could try to anchor it with a hoop from the carpet and a tiny screw under the seat. |
I don't often have people in my backseat if I can help it, but still... Screws under the seat will leave 2" of gap between the floorboard and carpet so if someone steps on it the carpet will tear or stretch.
I will probably use a piece of sheet metal and expanding foam to level out the floor pan behind the front seats. I only need about 2" to make up the gap and there are the weird humps in the floorboard back there anyway. It's a similar process that some companies use to package heavy items. Lay down a layer of thin plastic, like saran wrap or shrink wrap, tape it to your piece of sheet metal or partical board with holes drilled in it to inject the foam through. Let the foam do what it do and tape off the hole as it starts to come out. Just make sure it stays level. It will be removable and custom contoured to the floorboard.
My posting was more to find out if anyone knew of a company that made carpet that such a solution isn't necessary becuase this problem is

Ran the RCAs and speaker wiring this weekend its so easy when you have a stripped interior you can run the wiring where you want to run it

and no I'm not putting a huge system in this car but I like my tunes so a set of components and a small 8" sub will be enough for me

probably no more updates for a week or two I'm pretty busy with work and other things right now but next up is refinishing the trim in my trunk I'm going to carpet it with black speaker enclosure carpet inspired by Broadfield

I just used speaker enclosure carpet b/c it stretches nicely around odd shapes

vs.
Complete!
Here's what it looked like when I got the car haha
Reupholstered the rear deck too
The old one was SHOT so I cut out a new one
and finished it with carpet
Sun visors dyed black to match the rest of the interior, Dupli Color Vinyl Dye this stuff is really good matches OEM almost perfect
Did the 3rd brake light too from 80s blue to black
Finally installed the headliner
Seat mocked up

| Ok, the vinyl die you are using, does it work on the dash and plastic trim? My interior is a dark brown. Now, the trim and stuff is no issue... I could just try to find black replacements, but the dash is another issue entirely. So, would this stuff work on all of the vinyl/plastic? And have you had any time to see how it wears and holds up with age? |
It works on the plastic trim I've sprayed a few peices b/c mine was blue and it looks great, the key is prep make sure you clean the old dirty trim really really well get all the dirt/oil/grime off of it first. Don't know if I would use it on the dash might be worth a shot I mean its only $7/can and you would probably need 2 cans to do the entire dash. Not sure how it will hold up b/c the car hasn't been driven in a long time but I did a scratch test to see if it would chip off easily and it didn't. It wasn't that great on the carpet it worked but kinda makes the carpet stiff.
Post Title: Re: Update 04/26/09 (gregfarz78)
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 5:27 AM 4/27/2009
GREG! the carpet yes it makes it "stiff" take a tire cleaning brush or any scrub brush and scrub in small circles over the entire carpet. It will "break up" the fibers and make it feel factory again. It was a trick I used when I worked at a car lot (trial and error methods) which worked the best for me. Get back to me after/if you do this and tell me how it worked for you.
Also by using the same dye greg used on the carpet for the headliner works really well too and looks REALLY good. But make sure you even out the color. If youre not careful you may have a darker spot than the rest or vise versa. Use the brush method (mentioned above) on the headliner too for a factory feel (check out my build thread in my Sig on how i did it)

The seats look like they belong in the car, they around mounted yet though b/c the project is sorta on hold for now. We're in the process of selling our house and moving into a new house so I need to work on fixing that up first before I continue on the car. I'm still going back and forth on the VQ if I want to keep it or go big and do LSx swap, I might just build the VQ b/c I already have it but the wiring still scares me hopefully someone else will figure it out before its time for me to wire it up. I've never worked with ensolite or any sound deadening material so bear with me.
The black padding is the ensolite and what is the silver foil?
Can I ask why you chose RAAM?
Do you know any higher end/lower end but reputable choices?

I WAS JUST TRYING TO SHOW YOU WHAT I HAD DONE....Since I live in Ohio I have a plastic windshield scrapper for the snow so I used that paint thinner a hammer and a crowbar/chisel. the paint thinner helped soften up the sound deadening a lil I think and worked its way between the deadening and the metal. After I got most of everything up that way i had a 3m scuff pad laying around so I grabbed that and sanded the trunk and the spots that were left. Then I went out and bought 2 cans of duplicolor truck bed liner. I did a base coat pretty much the first day it was solid but very thin and could scratch but it used a whole can. On the second day after work I put on a second and final coat and put it on thicker in areas that were more likely to have sharp objects come in contact like in the tire well is really thick. but the good thing about this is you always can go spray some more on if it does happen to scrape off and as long as your good with spray painting you should easily be able to blend it.

I recently did some similar things on my interior but on the cheap (just using my nasty oem stuff)
http://smg.photobucket.com/alb...%2009/
I didnt want to post IMG's because that is too much of a thread jack :P
I just used Boommat spray on sound deadner and Duplicolor Bedliner over it on the trunk and rear seat area (to give it a smoother finish)
2 Cans of each
I dyed the carpet and headliner black with Duplicolor Fabric and Vinyl after shampooing the s*** out of them. Using the shampoo brush to brush off the paint and make the carpet soft again. I used 2.5 cans for the carpet and 1.5 cans for the headliner.
Everything has held up great and I drive my car almost every day. You need to be careful with the bedliner and not just drop heavy stuff on it or it will nick. Also you need floor mats or the carpet paint will start to rub off, but I have had it since April with no mats and its held up quite well.
Yes, I need a battery box. But this way works well except it wont pass track inspection. Also planning to get a pair of Low Max replica seats to finish the look.

| I just got some aircraft stripper to try and remove my tine like you did, and I have a couple of questions. 1. What type of tool did u use to scrape off the tine (razor blade, metal or plastic scraper)? 2. What type of material did you use to protect the surfaces you didn't want aircraft stripper on? | Hope you didn't use the Duplicolor fabric paint for that stuff. It rubs right off. |

| I commend you on some fine work here. Wish i had the time and money to do the same. |
