Posted by: mik3025 at 11:54 AM 7/15/2008

Hello everyone, I`v read on a previous topic a problem related to a "humming" sound at engine start up.I was recently and still confronted with this annoying sound. My first check up in due in a couple of weeks.have heard that some of you had resolved this problem, but more specifically what was done to eliminate this sound? any parts replacement? my car was build in 12-07, and it`s a Canadian version.
Thank you

Welcome to Nico. Glad you found us and I hope we can help entertain you as well as provide some information on issues you may have.

I have read about that problem but I have not received information on exactly what it is, other than it is covered by the warranty. Some say the have to change a part, others say they had to tighten the part.

Maybe someone who had the service done will come along and set us straight...

Again, welcome to Nico.

Thank god it's not just me. I just bought my EX on Saturday and the humming happens during normal driving (although it's not as loud as when the car starts). It doesn't always hum but once it starts the only way to stop it is to restart the car.

And welcome to Nico to you too Jay. I have a feeling it has something to do with the electric fuel pump. If either you or Mik have the service department look at it, please post the results.

Thanks

This humming noise is definitely your fuel pump. I had the same issue. I could hear mine at start up and it was VERY obvious at idle also. I was sitting at a stop light one day and the noise became very evident. Initially I thought the noise was coming from somewhere outside. But after I drove another two or three miles the noise "followed" me! Brought the car to the dealer the next day and as soon as I described the noise he new instantly what it was. Mine was the second EX35 they said had the problem. They had to order the new fuel pump. Three days later the new pump was installed and the noise is gone. Sometimes I faintly hear it during start up again but it is silent at idle.

Well, mine has the same symptom, but only during start-up, never at idle. It's in the shop today so I'm interested to see what the mechanic assesses the problem to be. I'll post again after I get it back later today.

BTW, they gave me a 2008 FX35 as a loaner. It feels bigger to drive but doesn't have all that much more room inside. I was surprised though, that its handling feels more taut, with less front-end plow. This was unexpected since the larger car has more momentum; apparently, the suspension and tires have more than overcome it. Bottom line: With the right tires and some suspension tweaks, there's hope for our EX's to give noticeably better cornering.

Hi folks,

Thought I'd just add confirmation to this being the fuel pump. Had my car in yesterday for service because of the humming noise (sounded more like a squeak/squeal to me) at startup and a leaky sunroof. Service Manager was quick to say he thought it was the fuel pump (before they looked at it) and that they had had at least 1 other EX with that noise and that's what it was. He was also quick to point out that "there's no actual problem, it's just noisy so don't worry about being stranded or anything".

They had to order the part which he indicated is on back order. He wasn't sure how long it would take to get the part in. Also said they ordered extras for stock. He said they had to come from Japan as there was NO stock at all available in NA.

So, that tells me that this is a fairly common EX issue. As to whether it's a REAL problem or not, who knows. As a note, my car isn't making the noise except at startup.

Of course now that I've said that...

Cheers,

Colin

Funny, when I first heard it, I characterized it as a moaning or groaning sound.

Just got my car back and yes, they said it was the fuel pump and that it had to be ordered.

Riker2k: I'm dealing with 417 Infiniti ... are you at Tony Graham or 417 also? (Either way, I'd sure love to compare notes.)

Cheers,
David

RobertN, do you know if that fuel pump is of the same generation as the original one? if not, there is no guarantee that the problem will be resolved! or could be related to a specific month production fuel pump batch. When was your car manufactured? mine is dec 2007.

Moaning, groaning, squeaking, creaking... Hard to explain what the sound is! All I know is that this car has so many features I can hardly keep track of a bug vs. a feature. Damn rolling lockout of features for Music Box and NAV is driving me NUTS... Anyhow, that's a different thread.

Tony Graham is my dealer. I heard some not so great things about 417 and I had a hookup with a salesman in Bells Corners so that's how I ended up there. Very happy with the sales person.

Anything you want to compare notes on, just say the word!

Cheers,

Colin

Everyone one here states that it is the fuel pump. They have been right so far (they were right about the power tilt wheel "grinding" being a bad motor - my dealership just replaced that and it is gone now). I also have the momentary HUMMMM at engine start up ... just called the dealership (Infiniti of Norwood ... in Massachusetts - they have been GREAT) and told them that this forum states that is the fuel pump and it is a known issue. My service advisor ordered one for me (while I was on the phone) and they'll call me when it comes in! Thanks Guys!

Hello Guys
I posted here before about the fuel pump that they called me and said my part was in last week. So i ran down the tank to almost empty. I Called this morning and stated to them i wanted to come in to have my pump that was in stock to be replaced. They said come on down at 12:00 noon. So off we went to the dealer 48 miles with an empty tank. When i get their they gave me a loaner and state it will take about two hours to do, we will call you on your cell. One hour later they call me no part in stock. Here we go again. They say it's on back order, i think they installed it in another car. They filled up my tank for free and said when the part comes in they will drive a loaner up to my house and take my EX 35 to to dealer for me to install the pump. You can't get mad with them.
10/07/08 You have to run the tank down low before they can drop the tank to replace the pump......

Did the Dealer tell you that you needed to run the tank low before the fuel pump was replaced ?
